Translated into commonly known resolutions, the PS1 was generally 240p, the PS2 was 360p/480p, the PS3 was subHD/720p, thus the expectation for the PS4 was 900p/1080p (which it thus far has been).
People were especially exited to get to this new resolution because console gamers have been stuck at subHD/720p for several years now, while movies, TV, Youtube and PC gamers have long since adopted 1080p as a common standard.
It's understandable people would be annoyed their new several hundred $ console isn't able to meat the standards most other mediums have long since adopted.
That all said, the situation isn't as bad as many people make it out to be. For the most part the X1 has avoided 720p, and the PS4 has avoided it completely. It's perhaps just bad luck that the X1's 3 most popular titles (sales wise) are all either 720p, or close to it (BF4, COD, TF. I know TF isn't actually in the top 3 yet, but it will be relatively quickly so you get my point :p).
