Forums - Gaming - I just realised if 720p is so horrible, how did we survive

well, when I played Red Dead Redemption on my PS3 I wished for a next gen version, because everything got so blurry just a few feet away from the character (and I doubt that was meant to indicate heat haze)

I'm not sure if the OP is serious or whether he's trying to be funny, but that's just a terrible argument.

"I just realised if cartridge based games are so horrible, how did we survive"

indeed

Prior displays mostly offered a smaller resolution and smaller screen size but today I expect these so called "next gen consoles" to be able to atleast hit 1080p early in it's lifetime. In due time I expect the PS4 to drop resolution later in it's lifetime.

1) Its a proven fact by Psychology that people need to rationalise and justify their purchase decision to achieve cognitive balance. I have a Degree on Marketing, i know what i'm talking about.

2) I never said there wasnt, i said people feel the need to rationalise their purchase decisions and thus give it importance. These people beeing the vocal people in the internet (these are the ones we are talking about, not the AVERAGE consumer as you put it. Those obviously dont even know what resolution these numbers mean). Though i firmly believe 60fps will benefit any game.

3) Alot depends on that, so its not necessarely true.

1) Even if 8th gen games are running at 720p... the vastly superior visuals, frame rates, and 8th gen exclusive library will help rationalize their purchase.

2) If you put it that way, I agree.

3) I'm just pointing out the X1 and PS4 have limitations. If AAA developers focus on achieving 1080p and 60 fps at all times, that will effect how far they push in game graphics.

What a weak argument. Uh, it was the past? Aren't we supposed to be progressing with tech, not moving backwards? If that's you're argument, then I have the console for you. It's called the 360.

What's funny about this argument is that when the next Xbox comes out and is 1080p for all games, Xbox fans will be trumpeting how much of an improvement it is over last gen, while this gen many said its not that big of a difference or they can't tell the difference.

I was already fed up with 720, no AA and low fps during the last years of gen 7. Namely when I started playing on PC.
Even TLOU, one of the supposedly best looking titles of the gen, was just awful to look at. Jaggies and low res textures everywhere. Topped off with fist sized pixels.

Killzone sf is 1080p single player and multiplayer. People try throwing out 960x1080 I believe. Look at an interview with the producers of the game. It mostlly 1080p, but parts of the farame are in a lower resolution to keep performance up. It's pretty common in the gaming industry to do this to boost performance. Most people would just never comment on it.
And no, res isn't the only thing in a game. As a hardcore PC gamer, I'm very aware of this. But the fac of the matter is, there's basically always a resolution increase between generations. Also, the number of pixels displayed on the screen makes a large difference on other things that can be displayed, like details and AA.

I know the SP is 1080p, that's why I said MP. The MP is not 1080p. Or, if you want to talk semantics, it's not native 1080p. It tries to simulate a native 1080p image without pushing the pixels of a native 1080p image. And it does so using a technique that blurs the hell out of the screen when you move, which defeats the whole purpose of 1080p anyway. Either way, that was not the point. The point was lots of people praised the game and used its native 1080p60 MP bullet point as ammo for console wars, and these very people had no idea that the MP was neither 1080p or 60 frames per second. So what have we learned? Either the people making such a big deal about 1080p are full of bulsh, or most people cannot even tell the difference. Or, as a bonus, maybe both?

1080p games existed last gen, so there hasn't been any resolution increase yet, no matter which console you buy. I guess we'll finally enter next gen when 4K games start coming out. Until then lets wallow in our current stop gap gen technology :(

Because 720p isn't horrible.

So now where back to 1080p doesn't matter? It's hard to keep up with what's the latest "the power difference between Xb one and PS4 doesn't matter because...".
