Yu Suzuki is looking into Kickstarter for Shenmue 3

Yu Suzuki is researching Kickstarter, and looking into the possibilities of using it to fund future projects.

Suzuki's always been vocal about how he'd like to return to Shenmue, a series famously cut short after the 2001 sequel, if the chance arose. At yesterday's Shenmue post-mortem at this year's GDC, he said he'd like to make Shenmue 3 with the "right opportunity."

Speaking in an interview today, Eurogamer asked Suzuki that, given his desire to make the game and the fans desire for him to return to the series, whether he'd considered crowd funding the game via Kickstarter.

"Yes," Suzuki answered. "I am researching it."

Suzuki was unable to go into specifics about how much he'd need to raise to make Shenmue 3 a possibility - the original two games famously cost $70 million to make, a figure that amounts to $98 million today taking inflation into account - nor did he want to commit to bringing the project to Kickstarter, reiterating that he's merely researching it at present.

Suzuki's been notoriously elusive since Shenmue 2, most recently working with his own company ys.net on mobile games. So what is he working on right now?

"Just now, I don't have anything I can say yet," he smiled. "I can't announce right now - but I'm making something."

Pains me to say it, but with the Shenmue postmortem now done and dusted, and not even a hint of Shenmue 3 during the postmortem, i think this ship truly has sailed now once and for all

I know we keep hearing that he would like to make it, but he is not getting any younger, and SEGA are terrified of potentially losing millions again. (if ONLY more gamers would have bought a ps2 AND A DAMN DREAMCAST).

Such a shame that so many millions of people snubbed this LEGENDARY game.

neh.. if millions op people played it, it wouldn't have a legendary status like this.. I actually wonder sometime if people are lying that they played this game cause its 15 years old and there were just over a million copies sold..

Why isnt Cerny and Sony funding this? I thought they were friends. Its a great opportunity for Sony.

Star Citizen is the most sucessful kickstarted campaign as far as i know, and that is about 50 million. 100 million is a very difficult goal. Its also assuming dreamcast level funding (though there was a saturn version that went quite far aswell, so some of it was wasted).

Yeah, I agree. It's like with EarthBound, which, would it have been a massive hit back in the day, wouldn't have such a cult following.

I myself bought a Dreamcast a month ago, and with it, I got a copy of Shenmue. I'm not too far into the game (I have to talk to sailors in that place with all the shops and the arcade), but so far, I do enjoy it, and I would certainly back a Shenmue 3 Kickstarter. Would be the first one I back, too.

But yeah, it's most likely not gonna happen.

I swear I've been hearing this for years lol

I have no idea why they just couldn't reskin Yakuza 3, 4 or 5 into Shenmue 3.
