Honestly, I haven't given a shit about the Metroid series since they turned it into a crappy first person shooter and ruined it.

You're absolutely right! The creator of Metroid should have absolutely no say in how Metroid is handled!
That was, of course, sarcasm. As a Metroid fan, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was different and refreshing. I played through it once, went back to get 100%, and then watched the movie mode. Nintendo, Retro, and Team Ninja Metroids are all good in their own ways.

The story of the Metroid Prime games has little impact on Metroid as a whole, aside from providing more background lore about the Chozo and the Space Pirates (and even then, the contradictions split if you consider the Zebesians to be a separate species from the Pirates seen in the Prime games). Similarly, Other M's story doesn't matter to the franchise except informing players of Fusion, where the "Federation is Evil!" thing kind of comes out of left field. Also Adam first shows up dead in a computer. Other M "fixes" that (or at least tries to) So the game doesn't need replacing. All the franchise badly needs is its next "core" entry to get the ball rolling again. |
I can't say I agree on Other M's story not mattering. Completely ignoring characterization issues of Samus, Adam, and everyone else involved in Other M, it makes Fusion (and Samus in Fusion) seem a whole lot dumber, for a number of reasons. Firstly, since Other M's plot is basically Metroid Fusion except with a murder mystery element swapped in for the SA-X, the Galactic Federation seems rather stupid for trying this again, especially considering how their last attempt at this nearly ended with the space station being rammed into some planet somewhere (or whatever was going to happen). Samus is also affected by this as well, her surprise at the Metroid cloning program aboard the BSL makes sense if Samus hasn't run into any secret Federation Metroid breeding programs after Super Metroid. But, she has with Other M's story in place, and now she has absolutely no right to be surprised whatsoever.
The fact that Other M's story is so similar to Metroid Fusion's makes Fusion seem much sillier when put in the timeline in chronological order. If Sakamoto were willing to come in and magically remove it from series canon, it'd at least put Fusion back on the same ground it would, ignoring all other benefits to be had from resuscitating Samus' character.
I think the reason I enjoyed Other M was inversely proportional to all the massive bottom lips regarding the story:
I don't care about such a trivial thing as narrative in a Nintendo game, because I was schooled that way.
