Honestly I believe there will be a Kinectless XOne. Not sure what date though. XOne will work fine without Kinect.
But I do not believe it will sell like hotcakes after that though. There will be other things up Microsofts sleeves that will have more of an impact. But I think it will be too late by then to become 1st this generation. But they will still make a nice profit.

How exactly is Kinect integral? Is it required to be able to start up a game? I thought it was just convenience for turning the box on and logging in automatically.

Exactly its a nice to have add-on.
It's probably because of the kinect voice recognition thing in different languages.

The delay is cause they were not ready to release in the first place.
Sony took them by surprice and they didnt want to face the same problems Sony had last generation with being a year behind.
This is also the reason DirectX 12 is only now about to release. (Wich btw will cause improvements to the system)
