Forums - Gaming - Igarashi leave's KONAMI. Plans to open his own studio to create games he like's to make

I'd been wondering what had happened to people like him recently. Konami seemed like a dungeon where old videogame designers would get locked up and never allowed to work on new projects. Unless your name is Hideo Kojima.

Good luck to him. It seems like there's quite a paradigm shift in some of the bigger Japanese publishers this generation.

Started last gen, really, with Kamiya, Inafune, and Mikami ditching Capcom. Itagaki and Tecmo, Igarashi and Konami, Naka and Suzuki and SEGA all of the older generation of Japanese game designers that aren't with Nintendo or Square Enix.

The trouble they all seem to be running into is... finding publishers. Mikami got well set up with Zenimax, while Kamiya's Platinum dumped by Sega, mercenary working for Konami and now living basically on Nintendo's charity, Naka's Prope has had its game in development hell, Inafune is stuck punting around on Kickstarter, and Devil's Third is also fast in danger of becoming vaporware (whatever the rumors might say).

Mistwalker's been pretty successful, though we haven't heard a thing from them since Last Story.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

This is great news.

I typed a slightly lengthy reply to you but it got lost when my ISP dropped, the gist of it was:

- Inafune has done far more than just "punted around on kickstarter"

- The other devs should set their sights more appropriately on smaller publishers like MAQL or Atlus rather than returning to AAA development if they really wanted to get out of it.

Aye, i remember Soul Sacrifice not soon after i posted. My bad. (my mind was mostly on Might Number 9)

Best gaming related news I've heard in a while. ^_^

Honestly I'm surprised he didn't move on sooner, as he was pretty much shelved by Konami. Although with him now gone and MercurySteam moving on from the franchise (and how Lords of Shadow 2 has completely and utterly bombed at retail), the Castlevania IP is not in a good position at this point.

I honestly wonder what is going to happen  to the Castlevania IP. After the hot disaster that was  Lords of Shadow 2 I doubt that MercurySteam is going to touch the franchise ever again. I know! They will start making half-assed Castlevania games for  mobile phones! Problem solved!

Well that sucks. I was hoping for more traditional Castlevania games.

I played the Lords of Shadow trilogy and every game in that series was disappointing.

I have a feeling that we'll see a similar situation with how Inafune created Mighty No. 9 after leaving Capcom and no longer having the rights to Mega Man.

Even if he doesn't have the rights to the Castlevania franchise, he did state that he wanted “...to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make—the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well,”. And remember that Dracula (and Alucard) are public domains so he could still use them in his future games.

CastleDracul anyone?

I honestly thought he'd left over a year ago. o_O

Yeah, that's safe to presume. I'll support his kick starter presuming he does one.

Just a shame that Konami is letting that IP go to waste.
