They're kinda cannibalizing their own market for short term gain though.

A person who has a 3DS would probably be right to ask "why should I buy a Wii U? I get Mario Kart, Mario 3D, Mario 2D, Smash Bros., Zelda, DKC on my 3DS that gives me my Nintendo franchise fix, I'm not spending $300 on another console for the same franchises".

Also I really do think both NSMB2 and NSMBU were hurt by being released so close to each other.

Your only seeing one side of it. The other side of it is console gamers who have refused to buy handhelds because those are dumbed down games. Now we are seeing very similar games appear on handhelds as we see on home consoles so people who have the home consoles are more likely to expand to own handhelds as well because the software is starting to get on the same quality level as home console software.

And who is going to care about the Wii U version once they already heard about the 3ds version? My point exactly. Stupid move by Nintendo.

Yep, since as I've been saying, SSB4 wont move Wii U units long term regardless of whether or not it's exclusive, so better to maximize profits and boost up the system that's actually doing something. Good job not responding to my previous response towards ya though!

Thing is this will kill any future home console sales too because people will expect the next smash to be on a portable too.

This strategy kind of puts those hybrid system rumors bit closer to reality. Sad part is if they do have a hybrid system how will this system ever keep up with Sony even at PS4 levels. It will be so outdated unless the console has its own super hardware (almost PS5 level) and the portable has its own different hardware

As if Smash was such a pivotal console seller to begin with lol. Also it will not "kill," only lessen the hardware boost for the home console, but at the same time it'll give the handheld a boost aswell, so all this really does is spread around the wealth and allows the game a chance to still sell well even if one of the systems fail.

I doubt they'll make a hybrid system, but if they do, it wouldn't need to be at PS4's power level to do well enough for itself. Just needs to be cheap, have a constant stream of games flowing, and marketed more as a handheld, but this is getting off topic!

I'm guessing that guy's a villian, so losing and being wrong are what he's all about!

A shame Nintendo won't ever do cross-buy. But no, I don't think the WiiU version will sell well.

You know how much Melee sold right? Sure, this one's multiplatform and the Wii U is currently doing worse than the GCN ever was, but I'd still expect 5 million minimum for the Wii U version.

And you know how much the previous 2D Mario games have sold, right?

And you know 2D Mario =/= Smash Bros. right?

So, SSB4 will buck the trend that Wii games have been following?

Uh no, the Wii U version alone will obviously be short of Brawl, but it doesn't have to sell like Brawl to sell well. Hence I brought up Melee, a game that sold really well despite the GCN's poor install base.

If Mario can't get those 5M sales, SSB4 won't either.

So if X can't do something, Y can't do it either. Yeah that logic seems perfectly sound!

Not to mention it's still to early to say NSMBU wont reach 5 million, and you're still disregarding how well Melee sold on the GCN's measly install base. It was even lower than the N64's, yet Melee still outsold it's predecessor, so that should be a testament to the selling power of the series.

No. It's stupid because they announced both versions simultaneously. They could have easily made the Wii U version first to bolster hardware sales then announce and release the 3ds version a couple months later.

and how would that benefit gamers?

it still will. Because you are only looking at it from the WIi U point of view, that is not there only system. YOu are assuming that Smash bros, was going ot move a bunch of consoles in the first place. 3ds or not, it wasnt IMHO. Ninty is doing the smart thing by offering the game to people who do have a 3ds, my point is there were some people that were NEVER going to get Wii U regardless of what came out, why not offer them an alternative and get some money?

WHa? how does that make sense? did the portable Marios hurt console sales? did the portable Kart games hurt console sales? You have to give people more credit than that. They are not stupid, they understand that the HW difference is big enough that the two versions will be different.

As for your second point, you might be right. It is what it is. Thing is Ninty was never going to get back into the HW power fight with Sony or MS, they cant win, there. They lost with N64 and they lost with GC, and they won with Wii, the power ship has sunk.

That doesnt make any sense for 2 reasons

1. Mario (NSMBU) is almost at 4mil and wiiu isnt done selling meaning it'll leg out over 5mil

2. SSBM was the best selling game on Gamecube, so your "If Mario can't get those 5M sales, SSB4 won't either" doesn't hold any meaning
