Dragon's Dogma certainly portraits gay characters in a very human, normal way.

Heck, you can't even tell if your own character is gay until the end. Now THAT's how you do it.

The challenge is homosexuals, much like heterosexuals, do not fit pre-defined molds of behavior.  I have known homosexuals to be as flamboyant as can imagine and others to be very introverted where vast majority assume they are heterosexual.  Games do well to show this variation in all character design so characters are not "insert identifying trait here" but a person with multiple traits.  For some people a trait they have is a big part of their identity, it could be their sexual orientation, their ethnicity, their religion, their political affliation, favorite sports team, etc.  For others these even out and don't have strong attatchment to any such labels.

So, my point is, rather than feeling the need to fit a quota, games should strive for variation in narrative and character to give new experiences and offer new insight.

b) relatability. When a story is told, interactive or not, you enjoy the story by imagining to some extent that you are in the situation yourself. You save the day, you get the girl...whatever it is. You are the hero. The difference between being attracted to a man or a woman is a pretty big difference to most people. So having a gay hero saving or wooing a man breaks the immersion to most straight men. Romancing a man is simply not interesting to them, so the story becomes uninteresting. This makes it a challenge to write a story when you need to make money and you are going to lose a large portion of your potential audience.

I never found immersion to be a good thing really, if you create a character to channel the viewer or reader through them you'll be creating a mary sue, I find being a viewer watching characters interact with each other from a third person point of view to be better than immersion, you want to be with these characters, not be them, only games can do this with games like Mass Effect or walking dead, because you get to choose your own reaction to things.

sure not everything has to be realistic , dramatizied characters are all fun, but the topic is how gay characters should be "presented" realistically.

It's because writers are so bad with character development, they get lazy and use stereotypes.

What bugs me is when it seems like the only storyline that gay characters get is their sexuality. I know gay people can go through a lot of struggles regarding their sexual identity, but those aren't the only problems or aspects about their lives!
I like how The Walking Dead does it, both in the show and in the comics. It's part of their lives, but that's not their central definition of themselves, much like how straight people don't centralize their identity for their heterosexuality.

Well it may be a little single dimensional to define people solely on their sexual orientation, but I think that given the level of sexualization and attention people get when they come out of the closet in the USA (Here in Canada I don't feel it's such a big deal most of the time, maybe in the more conservative regions it's different)... That mentality makes it somewhat of a thing, I only hope it was portrayed, or sometimes completely ignored, as in many games the story is barely there, why would a character appear "gay", where you make your own it really makes no difference as it's not always written in someone's face what their preferences are, or if they have any such preferences at all.

For the regular heteros, it's easy to forget how present this is, but parents push their kids to make babies, get a partner of the opposite sex, there are tons of homophobes politicians in the news all the time... The straigh way of life is being pushed on us, wether or not we like it, some will try to conform to the norm, by will or by force, leading to unhappy life, trying to hide to them and their loved ones who they really are and making relationships that fall out of the expected behavious unbalanced because they must remain secret.

I think you did a piss poor job of stating your opinion but I get it. Not much else can be said, I'm sure people will be up in arms if there is an all white cast in anything, which is still the case for many many shows/commercials. In order to showcase diversity (in a lazy way anyways), the minorities HAVE to draw attention and what better way than to play out stereotypes.

I saw a black lady at the store where I work at buy 6 buckets of fried chicken, so there's that.

No, the topic is not how they should be presented realistically (most of us already know that typical presentations of gay humans are not realistic in most media), but rather that they should be presented realistically, and hopefully more often.  I'm presenting challenges to both - especially in film.  Games present a media option where a character can be either non-specific sexually (hell, even Mario could be gay) or that the experience can be tailored to a gaymer.

and what about dinoporn? we need more interspecies action in dino crisis...

Lulz at "Bidon", guess few will get it..

I guess any videogame with a gay main charachter will underperform.. Few would tolerate playing as a gay protagonist.
