Facial detail?  Really?  Well, I mean ... they look more human, now, if that's what you mean.  It's hard to say about the rest, as they changed the time of day, so it's darker.  The initial lighting, though, was obviously early-stage.  It looked like they were in an onmi-directional spotlight.  It wasn't close to natural.

I'm honestly shocked that people are calling it a downgrade.  I'm a person who doesn't even care that much about graphics but this is not the response I was expecting.

Relooking at the pics and yeah the character models definately took a hit. The detail in the beanie and the clothes in general is significantly less. :/ Also the retail shots, as BenV said, is blurry annd less refined. Look at the stones/rocks in the background also seems to have less detail. But anyways if you see it different then thats that.

I dont think this will have a big impact on the look of the game overal. We've all seen the game running already and it looks really good. Its not like we gonna be starring into delsins face the entire time :)

Honestly, I wasn't paying all that much attention to the rocks in the background.  I was just happy that the main character no longer looks like a neanderthal caught in high-power flood-lights.  I'll take less detailed background rocks if it means the people look more like people.

Also are these both direct feed shots? Because retail looks noticeably blurrier, like its either sub 1080p or they downgraded the AA.

So far have any game reached their unveils on graphics? Ryse also got a pretty decent downgrade from what I remember and Watch Dogs looks nowhere near its official unveil.

The March shots are from a video of the first 20 minutes of the game that was leaked today on Youtube, I think the max resolution for that video was 720p (it's deleted by now)

OT: The newer shots are definitely at a different time of day, so the lighting is obviously going to be different, there could still very well have been a downgrade in lighting but we'll have to wait for the final release to see this.

Ok so I get that the shadow effects are gone, but I personally notice that the faces especially in screen #2 and 3 looked better now then last year.

I dunno, guess graphics is in the eye of the beholder. It ain't no Watchdogs downgrade thats foresure.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Well, it is a very clear downgrade, but still looks amazing!

Really is mixed bag. From an art stand point I think they improved some things for sure. Delsons face for example looks slightly tweaked in a good way in terms of looks but if you zoom in on detail he clearly took a hit technically with less skin texture detail.

Also certain things like shadows took a huge hit. They may have been a little too overpowering in the earlier trailer but now they are nearly non existant.

It looks like Sucker Punch were forced to downgrade the game from a technical point of view but made some pretty great artistic choices to help cover it up.

My biggest issue is the retail version is noticably blurrier.

lol shadows didnt just take a hit they gone XD

If you go watch some of the recent gameplay it seems likely that part is due to the time of day. Without a direct source of strong light (which none of the screen in the 2014 version seem to have), the light becomes lightly spread. In gameplay where there is a strong single point light source (such as the sun :p), the shadows are back.

I'm not going to be making any comparison until they get some high quality screenshots for the 2014 version.

That compression is fucking horrendous.

Yeah look i think BenV summed it up well for me. The game took a hit technically i dont think that can be denied. There are improvements in other areas obviously. Also i didnt say the face looks better or worse just that it has less detail.

Looking at gameplay from the reveal and recent gameplay the differences arent perceptible. Although i hope the blur is from compression or something like that.

Ah that very well could explain the blurriness then as the new shots looked sub 1080 to me which I knew couldnt be right as the game is supposed to be native 1080p i believe.

Yep. Just speaking about the shots in OP.

The gameplay vids still look good to me.

This is just a mix of different time of day and compressed screenshots. Nothing to se here guys.... The game looks better than ever for launch, just look the last videos of the game.
