Forums - Sony - PS4 Could Get Close to Running Games Like inFAMOUS: Second Son at 1080p, 60 FPS – Sucker Punch Boss

Yesterday I had a chance to chat with Sucker Punch Studio Head and Co-founder Brian Fleming, during an inFAMOUS: Second Son preview event in Rome, and I took the chance to ask him if he feels that the PS4 has enough juice to be able to run, in future years, a game likeinFAMOUS: Second Son (that currently runs at 1080p, 30 frames per second) at the same resolution but pushed to 60 frames per second.

Fleming’s didn’t hesitate to respond “Maybe, yeah it’s possible. It’s right on the edge.”

He continued by saying that he’s not a graphics engineer, but he knows how close the studio is to that, and in some places they could already reach 60 frames per second, but not nearly in all places within the game, and while he doesn’t precisely know how much optimization is left on the table, he feels that over the course of the generation developers may get close to the 1080p, 60 FPS goal for a game with this kind of fidelity.

He also asked a very interesting question of his own: “Should people use that additional performance to increase the fidelity further or to go for 60 frames per second?”

Fleming eventually mentioned that he doesn’t yet know what Sucker Punch would do in that case as well, and that they might go for improved visuals over frame rate.

Personally - in this type of game at least - I definitely prefer the visual fidelity.

I really, really don't mind if it doesn't. I just want the game. As long as it doesn't slow down to a crawl, I could care less what the resolution/frame rate is (nothing below 720 of course.)

Awesome.

Agreed. Sometimes 60fps is nice, but other times i'd rather have a better looking game running at 30fps.

Definitely. Take inFAMOUS: Second Son as an example, I look at Delsin And Reggie's facial expressions and see how life-like they are and that drastically adds to the immersion of the game, and that is why (to me) graphical fidelity is so important. I would take better graphics over increased frames-per-second any day, granted that the frame-rate is stable of course, and the genre does not benefit from an improved frame-rate.

Hang on... could only "get close"!?

This guy didn't get the memo did he...

Explain please what you trying to say... makes no sense at all... I know you are trying to attack something but what?

OP. The others inFAMOUS are 30fps... I'm fine with that while they reach 1080p with good AA... I hate jaggies.

The already fantastic PS4 will continue to improve overtime. It's great if they are getting close now, and we are just at the start, going to be amazing what the likes of Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog are going to be able to do on the PS4 in the coming years.

It's open world game, with lots of particles and effects etc and lots of enemies... of course it would be difficult to reach 1080p and 60 FPS... not sure why thats difficult to comprehend from a technical perspective. Everyone already knows that all three didnt go with the out and out power that some wanted. For its price I am happy.

The online video the other night of infamous showed that this is by far the best looking game of the new generation.. throw into the mix that its open world and not some linear game, or a game where only 3-6 characters appear on screen at once, I think people can be pleased with the result..it's running at 1080p...

In terms of memo's... Sony I think are aiming for 1080p (even if its causes a a FPS hit), while MS are running scared of anything that mentions 1080p. It's apples and oranges.... so i think he did get the memo, cause the game is in 1080p ;)

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

They were likely targeting 1080p30 straight from the onset of development. For a game like this, 60fps isn't really required. inFamous2 was 30fps and that game feels extremely smooth. If this game as just as stable at 30fps, no one will be unhappy. 60fps is really a multiplayer requirement.
