Forums - Gaming Discussion - The industry wanted Wii to fail

BornFirst. said:

Posted something like this on another thread but wanted peoples veiws.

The thing is, from the start of this generation( being when the consoles were being preveiwed for the first time) it seemed the industry was totally against nintendo's strategy. The industry wanted Nintendo to fail, but its not the industry who chooses who comes on top its the consumer.

Here are a few links.

1) Strategy Analytics says Wii a non-factor:

2) Wallace declares Revolution as Nintendo’s last console:

3) Maeba and Mefibaugh say the PS3 will have 50% of the market at the end of 2006.

4) Yuta Sakurai declares the PS3 to outsell the Wii.

5) Business Week thinks Wii will cannibalize DS sales.http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/sep2006/gb20060920_163780.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index

6) Van Baker says casual gamers won’t be engaged with the Wii longer than a couple of years. Low resolutions will destroy the Wii future as well. http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5786&Itemid=52

7) Yankee Group says will sell only 11 million. http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3643&Itemid=2

8) Ed Barton says he cannot analyze the Wii strategy but puts it as a distant third anyway.http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12890

9) Even at the end of 2005, everyone still thought Nintendo would lose. Iwata says within 2006 and 2007, it will be clear who made the right choices.http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/mar2005/tc20050314_2243_tc121.htm

And i have a whole lot more. These industry analysts proclaiming nintendo would fail out of the gate every other week. and its still happens now. Now tell me. Really be truthfull in your answer.
If you were a 3rd party dev/pub and these "top"analysts you pay are saying all this FUD, would you make a game for the Wii? Now tell me how you would react 6months to a year later after the Launch of the Wii and seeing its success? the fact that you haven't even built assets or graphic engines or library's or even learnt the tech of the wiimote, how are you supposed to make anything other than shovel ware in less than a year?

I would not pay for anylists...

And if I was a gamedevelopper I would not skip to the Wii because it has a higer userbase... I would just making a game for a console without watching his sales =p.  If it is a good game it still can sell like 2-3 million copies on a userbase of 10 million..

It seems pretty hard for a lot of these devs, spewing out PS2 level graphics, and being a bit of a graphic programmer i think it is as hard as i think but i digress,

Working in the games industry and even doing a bit of graphics programming too I don't think it is.

A lot of folkes aks why the Wii is so succesfull yet does not a lot of big blockbuster games like say devil may cre etc... And i don't know about you but ever since the Wii has come to the market it has had a lot of resistance from a lot of people in the gaming industry. Maybe you haven't noticed, i dont know

No big blockbusters?

I see twenty games right there that have sold over a million with only three of those being non exclusives.

Is it unfair? Absolutely. Media is a pack of hungry wolves. Wii has been getting mostly positive view before, now it's really back to normal.

What else are they going to do if they have 80% of their resources tied up in other consoles, doom what little hope of return on investment they have left...?

This comments are too old, now the Wii is the winner in this war and PS3 is third or last place

Of course they wanted the Wii to fail, because it required them to change their business practices and actually be creative. It caused them to "think" outside of the box for once and also suggested that many companies hault their projects on the, then thought to dominate, PS3 and 360, and/or pick up an additional project for the Wii. Many STILL want the Wii to fail for these reasons. I don't think some developers will even know what really is happening till the end of this generation when the numbers are too high to ignore.

Oh I don't find computer graphics easy but I have done it before and I do know plenty about programming (since one of my degrees in in CS) so I have a good idea what goes into it.

Me saying it's not as hard as you think it is isn't saying that it's simple and any person could do it, I'm just saying that adapting your engine for the Wii isn't any harder than adapting your engine for any other current engine.

And I guess with your blockbuster comment you're trying to argue that people are ignorant?  I could have told you that.  Even game developers are people too and not all of them follow every piece of news about every game for every console/system out there.

A few of us were actually joking around today how we've gone from use to loving 80+ hour games or 48 hour gaming sessions to liking games we can pick up for 30 minutes and then go do something else as we get older.  Another guy who had been around a while was even talking about the longer he's worked in the industry the more he gets jaded.  I'm going a little off topic now I suppose, but just saying even the developers might not all be super hardcore gamers.

To tell you the truth I actually play pen and paper games and CCG's more than I actually play video games now.  Anyways, I'll stop going on random tangents.

Twestern you should write about your experiences in the game industry on a weekly/monthly basis...

=p It is a lot more interesting than the most news/threads on here..

I'm really not that interesting.
