Actually, most waiters are expected to know at least SOME things about the food they serve. Many patrons will inquire prior to purchase. There's a difference between knowing everything and having the bare minimum to do your job.

The bare minimun for a low-wage salesman is to know which consoles are which, stock, availability, and maybe genres.
Waiters know a little of what food contains, but may not know how it is prepared exactly.

Well, I've been a waiter before, and I know several, some from high end restaurants, some not. All of them have a fundamental understanding of what's in the food they sell, and for the questions that they don't have the answers to, they seek clarification from their manager (or Chef, if need be). Preparation is irrelevant to the topic at hand, since the parallel would be a gamestop employee being able to detail the manufacturing process of a console. Additionally, waitstaff generally rely on tips as part of their wages, being an unhelpful, ignorant waiter, get's you lower tips. Good ones, are far from 'low-wage' (though, to be fair, some waitstaff get screwed simply because of tip pooling, and other things that interfere with their ability to pad the traditionally lower wage of waitstaff).
Moreover, he knew how much RAM was in the One, what was it, just a lucky guess?
