If you live in Spain and plan on getting Mario Kart 8, you'll be able to grab yourself some of these key covers depending on where you preorder. The real interesting thing about these key covers is that Nintendo says they're based on game items. I don't know about you, but I don't ever remember items like the DK barrel and Cheep-Cheep Fish being in Mario Kart! Are we getting our first look at some new items for the latest outing?

Maybe the special items are back? Maybe DK barrel for Dk and Diddy Kong, 1 Up for Toad and so on.
But i think if that was the case we would have already heard about it.

Using a fish as an item? That's simply so cheap-cheap!

my theory:
DK Barrel- boost item, really helpful when you're falling because shoots you back to the track
1 up- barrier, protects you from one hit
cheep-cheep fish- distract item, the fish jumps on the screen blocking your view, if you touch on another kart you'll pass the item to the kart's owner that you've touched

Very interesting ideas! For the Yoshi's egg, it could be a giant egg that you roll out and it bounces around the course, or it could basically be a reskin of the Giant Mushroom, where you turn into the giant egg. I has no idea about the "?" Block though.

@ OP: When they said based on game items, did they specify which game? If not then they probably just meant what they said, being that these items are from nintendo games.

Now I have a idea for yoshi's egg!! the egg can be something like yoshi's ( ->+B) special attack in SSBB, the egg will roll in one direction hitting everyone in the way and when it hit some object of the track it will blow away everyone near in a big explosion... damn! i got so carred away by this topic, but maybe it'll be like you said, they're just representing itens from previous nintendo's games (i hope not)

In Double Dash Yoshi's egg was a homing projectile kind of like the red shell, except I think after it hits it drops items (like little automatic mushroom boosts)
