An Xbox360 in 2008 and a Wii in 2006.

I'm going to not help your theory and say the Wii.

If you let us include Handhelds then I would've had a different answer...

Look at the title. I am asking what was the previous console from any company you bought before you bought a Wii U. Not how many Wii U owners also own a Wii.

A 360 back in '09. I loved my Wii, but the call of "the other ones" was just too strong.

PS3 was the last home console I bought, but not the only last gen console I owned. I had all three systems last gen.

I guess we'll have to get input from the OP but the way I'm reading the sentence above is that 80% of Wii U owners' last console (as in the last they purchased before the Wii U) was a Wii.  Which is not the same as saying that 80% of Wii U owners own a Wii.

For example, I went Wii -> PS3 -> 360 -> Wii U so I wouldn't be included in that 80% because I bought two other consoles in between.

Look at the title. I am asking what was the previous console from any company you bought before you bought a Wii U. Not how many Wii U owners also own a Wii.

"Previous console" indicates single console owners or at least the main console and not just the one you bought the latest. If I had bought last gen a Wii, a PS3 and then an X360 I wouldn't consider the X360 to be my previous console. All of them would be my previous console. I think you misunderstood your friend exactly how I did now.
