No. The thesis is that 80% of people who own a WiiU also owned a Wii, not which next gen console you bought first.
The way he asked the question excludes everyone who bought a different console between the purchase of the Wii and the WiiU.
He should've instead just asked how many of the WiiU owners also own a Wii.

Look at the title. I am asking what was the previous console from any company you bought before you bought a Wii U. Not how many Wii U owners also own a Wii.

"Previous console" indicates single console owners or at least the main console and not just the one you bought the latest. If I had bought last gen a Wii, a PS3 and then an X360 I wouldn't consider the X360 to be my previous console. All of them would be my previous console. I think you misunderstood your friend exactly how I did now.
