The OP is trying to figure out if his friend's assumption, that 80% Wii U owners are people who went directly from Wii to Wii U, is true. Bearing that in mind, his question is perfect to gather the information he needs.

No. The thesis is that 80% of people who own a WiiU also owned a Wii, not which next gen console you bought first.

 The way he asked the question excludes everyone who bought a different console between the purchase of the Wii and the WiiU.

He should've instead just asked how many of the WiiU owners also own a Wii.

I guess we'll have to get input from the OP but the way I'm reading the sentence above is that 80% of Wii U owners' last console (as in the last they purchased before the Wii U) was a Wii.  Which is not the same as saying that 80% of Wii U owners own a Wii.

For example, I went Wii -> PS3 -> 360 -> Wii U so I wouldn't be included in that 80% because I bought two other consoles in between.
