You don't measure power of a country by it's military inventory. Instead by the willing of it's people.

If Russia gets into a war with Ukraine, it's gonna be another Afghanistan to them or worse. Ukrainians are very patriotic and the streets of Ukraine will be transformed into a graveyard for their army.

Interesting, at 04.00 Ukraine army have to surrend or else a attack will follow..

The Ukrain army is trained by the Russians and mostly exist out of pro Russia and people with a Russian heritage, also the weapons and vehicles are bought from Russia and are outdated. Good luck?

Financially this is also very interesting, it is the first time that during a crisis like this one that the Dollar is not succesfull on the market in fact it is falling now...

the russians just want the eastern part where ethnic russians life.  the rest is a welcome bufferstate between russia and the EU.

Russians cannot get what's not theirs unlawfully.

Crimea has a constitution and a sovereign body which is not Russian.

Everybody knows why this occupation is taking place.

sure we all know, russia is losing the controll over the ukraine an is taking over the pro russian parts of the ukraine.

and putin knows that the EU will not go to war over the eastern ukraine.   the EU wouldnt even go to war against russia for the western ukraine, but they would sell a lot of weapons to the enemys of the russians in the ukraine.

everybody into politics know that. putin knows that he cant win a war against the EU. they dont have the money and they dont have the know how to win such a war. but putin also knows that no one in the EU realy cares about eastern ukraine and that the people of the EU arnt willing to die for the eastern ukraine.

That's what Russia wants to do with the whole Ukraine. If people wants to be annexed to Russia it's alright.

However, if Russia is gonna do that through force, there's gonna be some terrible consequence.

Furthermore, I believe it will regurgitate the bad feelings the neighbors of Russian Federation have for them.

This is a big red flag. The question right now is who's next?

Whos next - Pribaltika ( Latvia Lithuania Estonia )

Russia do not wanna Ukraine as a whole, they want east of the country with rich natural deposits, industry, oil pipelines, gas pipelines and access to the sea. I mean Donetsk Kharkiv Odessa. Many Russians lives there.

West Ukraine is poor as a church mouse. How many billions Ukraine needs in 2014 alone ? Over 35 billions. + 1.5 billion every year for Russian gas ( they buy but do not pay ) Thats why they wanna to join EU - they needs money asap. And thats why West or USA dont support Ukraine right now - nobody wanna donate this bankrupt.

i was just asking myself this same question yesterday...

...if putin/russia has anything to gain from this i don't see it. seems risky with too many bad outcomes to me.

Russia has a naval base in Crimea where they keep their fleet... and it's pretty much the only place Russia can keep their western navy as northern ports freeze over too often to be reliable.

Basically to lose Crimea is to lose all western europeon naval capabilties.

More or less this. Some Russian presence will be in the Crimea for the foreseeable future whichever way the winds blow in Kiev, and i think, more than anything else, that's what Putin's trying to communicate here: we're going to protect our interests in the Crimea, and we are ready and willing to take action if you in Kiev become too adverse to the Russian populations.

They may honestly wish for Crimean repatriation to Russia proper, or for Crimea to become an independent or semi-independent state in Russia's sphere, a la Transnistria, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia, but i think for the moment it's primarily about posturing and laying a clear line in the sand to show Kiev what is "non-negotiable" even as elections come up that could change the face of Ukrainian politics.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Seems like the EU and the US instigated Ukrainian revolt in the hopes the country would join the EU / NATO and quietly drift away from Russian influence. The Western leaders didn't predict either the influence of the ultra-nationalists of the Right Sector, or the willingness of Russia to protect their interests.

I predict mid-term economic uncertanity for Russia and their investments, due to sanctions, but the blow on the face of Washington and Brussels over their obvious inability to come together and do something effective while Crimea is annexed and Ukraine possibly falls to civil war will damage them the hardest.

Seems awful conspiracy theoristish, espiecally considering just how much of a disaster the Ukraine has been.

There were plenty of reasons for revolution without the need for provocation.

It's been no secret the Ukraine was about to default hard.  Meanwhile, the president was skimming off the top pretty heavily.

Except you have things like the Nuland phone conversation that make the theory sound very plausible.

About the economic situation: it was Russia that offered to help with a huge bailout package. What other reasons for revolution were there?
