Forums - Sony - Does the PS4 have a weakness?

The only weakness: If the Wii U somehow comes out with some sort of software that makes people say "Oh, that controller is fucking awesome! Now I see why they have a second screen!" or if there's some software for Kinect that does the same for the Xbox One. Those two consoles come packed with peripherals so every dev can count on the customer having one (for now). The PS4 comes packed with nothing.

But if that sort of software really captures the audience, it could be easily ported to the PS4 to use it with the PS4 camera or a Vita (as controller or second screen) or any other smartphone/tablet (as second screen). These peripherals are available from the start, not years later like PS Move.

If developers are confident in their groundbreaking idea, they can expect their target group to buy these peripherals for that game(s). Wii Fit and Guitar Hero / Rock Band were also great successes although they needed peripherals that weren't cheap.

I know they can be available to the consumer but you can't count on all of the consumers having it like you can 100% count on them having a Wii U controller or a Kinect.  They can go out and buy a Vita or something (Hey, even I have a Vita and a Move!) but it's still not the same has having the Trojan Horse packaged in the box.  The reason the Wii games almost always had motion controls is because every Wii owner had them.  Move was better than the Wii remote but it was stll an additional purchase and that still hurt its support.  Even if they were available from the start, they still weren't packed in.

Wii Fit/Guitar Hero/Rock band were great successes for a few years--and Kinect is arguably the most successful peripheral of all time.  Still didn't get widespread support.  The Wii Remote got support for the entire life of the console because it came with every console.

Yes, but the situation is much better this time. Sony can react much faster to these trends because all tools/periphals for these games are already available from the start: PS4 Camera, PS Vita, Smartphone/Tablets and PS Move.

PS Move + Sports Champions would have been recepted much better, if Sony could have offered them within a year after the Wii Sports success... not 4 years after the Wii Sports hype.

Yes, the time and budget constraints to make games for this gen, coupled with the decrease of studios and publishers, are the weakness for all 3 console makers of this gen (maybe with the exception of Nintendo, since the Wii U is slighlty cheaper to develop for).

4 years from now, the ps4 and xbox one will have games, but their wont be as many as their were in the first 4 years of the 360.  Developers need to learn to make video games again, and not video art that they seem to like shoveling out each year.

the twitch stuff is funny, but it just wasn't need. there's all kinds of pervs that always comment when any kind of girl is in front of the camera. Even if there underage,I just find that creepy. To be honest there's also just not alot of content in the ps4 playstation store at the moment, but it's coming.

Well, I was thinking SONY being the weakness, but the way the PS4 is selling like crazy and then SONY laying off and looking to sell more buildings, they seem to be shaping up to go into the black and remain there for quite a while. If SONY can keep up this for the gamers attitude and sell everything that isn't bringing in money...

Thanks jlmurph!

The wii u is only cheaper to develop for if the game is easily within the capabilities of the console. Return to Castle Wolfenstein took something like 2 weeks to get working on original xbox compared to something like 6-9 months on ps2 because they had to somehow get it working on a less powerful console. Yes perhaps not the best example as PS2 was hard to develop for but the point is if you try to release a technically ambitious game on weak hardware it will clearly take far longer to get working. However if its a simple game then yes its probably far easier and cheaper to develop on wii u.

Yes PS4 has weaknesses. In fact they are more or less the same as the PS3. Sony has done little to improve this gen outside of providing developers a less exotic CPU architecture. Nintendo and MS just screwed up so bad that PS4 looks great in comparison.

I think the main weakness is the lack of appeal for consumer beyond current PS360 gamer market.
Bluray/DVD is too common, it dont have a wiimote-like, there is no wow factor compared to PC, casual/indie can be played for a large part on smartphone, I can't see any super-uber feature.

But being that way, the PS4 is currently catching most of the population coming from PS360, so it could be good enough !

No BC, price is higher than the Wii U, no games, fee for online service, power difference isn't nearly as much as people make  it out to be, inferior exclusives to Nintendo, and of course, Sony themselves (Financial situation).

That said, Microsoft's list of weaknesses is 10x that of Sony's.
