| pokoko said: The problem is not that Donkey Kong was made--we do need more fur-based games, after all--it's simply that there isn't much else that will draw in new customers, as most DK fans already jumped for on board for Mario. In that regard, Donkey Kong is blameless. It's just a matter of timing. Donkey Kong would have been fine if more variety had already graced the Wii U. As it stands, it highlights the root of Nintendo's problems, which is too narrow a focus in terms of genre and aesthetics. So, I think dwelling on Donkey Kong is ignoring the real issue. Things didn't turn out as Nintendo envisioned, which left a quality game hanging out to dry. The real focus should be on what Nintendo is going to do about increasing the scope of catalog, not on cutting out what they already do well. They don't need less DK, they need more other stuff. |
I wholeheartedly agree. I'm a big NIntendo fan and I didn't buy NSMBU because it didn't want another 2D platformer. I bought SM3DW and Rayman because they looked really goog though. And platformers are among my favorite genres. DK is a good franchise, but as the third first-party platformer, I honestly have to say I'm getting a bit worn out.
Things are looking better for the future, though. X is a JRPG, Mario Kart is a Racer, Smas Bros. is a Fighter, and Bayonetta 2 is an Action game. Nintendo is hinting at more E3 reveals than last year (not blowing everything away in a February Direct), and Mario's focus is decreasing.

Easy. Galaxy games are iconic, even today, six and a half year later from release. 3D world on the other hand has dissapeared just 4 months after release.
Again, I'm not saying those games are bad. I'm saying those aren't the games the Wii U needed to sell.

I only read the OP but I agree with Pavolink.
Poor Marketing + Combined with Delay is what put DKC:TF in this situation
In fact, Nintendo's Wii U Marketing has been bad across the board
Expecting a single game to move many consoles is ludicrous and a hype fever dream, even a bunduru can only go so far. Nintendo's advantage is their "library" from their "head start" if they can't market that well then their own games will be strained by their marketshare.

I'm PRETTY sure that DKC Returns sold 540k on an userbase almost TEN TIMES the size of the Wii U's current userbase... Essentially: DKC:TF - 240k - 5.7 mil userbase DKC:R - 540k - 60 mil userbase It sold almost half what Returns did on ONE TENTH the userbase. And I didn't even check what the userbase size when Returns released in 2010, I just guessed that number, but it's no doubt MASSIVELY larger than the Wii U's current one. It's not really bombing, especially considering it will most likely top 1+mil easily, and see a boost when Mario Kart 8 releases (which will most likely see a boost in hardware). |
541k was just the North American launch. Also 237k includes two weeks for Japan as well as first week in all major territories. It's difficult to get a direct comparison since VGC doesn't show weekly sales for NA and Others, but after three weeks DKCR was released in NA/Japan/EU and had sold 1.662m. Removing the second and third weeks of US sales gives us 1.198m which is roughly equivalent to the time frame for current DKCTF sales.

I respect ur opinion and agree with u to an extent but I hope u realize basically the entire industry is guilty of the same thing. There have been 4 Uncharted games since 2007, what drastic changes have occurred? What about God of War, 6 games in 9 years with minor changes. How are the latest Killzone/Ratchet/Gran Turismo different from previous installments? The same goes for Halo/Madden/FIFA/Assassins Creed/Forza/Call of Duty/Battlefield/Splinter Cell/Tekken/Soul Calibur/Final Fantasy/Street Fighter/Resident Evil/Dragon Quest/Monster Hunter/Tales/Far Cry and many others. What major changes have these games had in the last 5-10 years? I dont get how u can critisize Nintendo for something Sony/Microsoft/EA/Activision/Namco/Ubisoft/Capcom/Square do as well. |
C'mon now. Please dont try and associate the milking of Nintendo games to the likes of any other franchise in videogames.
There were 2 god of wars on the playstation 2. 2 god of wars on the playstation 3. Thats 4 games. Thats all in a 8 year span. There were 3 uncharted games on the ps3. Thats all in a 6 year span.
Put that against mario releases in on year. In 2013 alone we saw over 10 mario related games. Thats all in 1 year.
It not me thats suffering with no unique ips to play on the playstation, Uncharted 2 introduced a multiplayer mode that fun and different from other multiplayers out there, so has God Of War. No one asked for these changes and additions, but the developers found a way to expand on the game and by god they took chances. They tooks risks.
Ratchet & Clank has added remote play with the Vita. Buy the game play it remotely from any internet connection.
Almost all ps4 games will have remote play. Where are the 3DS/WII-U remote play ?
Again, im not suffering here, its the nintendo gamer that gets the shaft and continues to keep coming back for more.
Speak with your wallet.........
I'm loving all these platformers, it's what I grew up on going right back to my Amstrad days, I can't stop playing DK it's got me hooked, it would be nice though for Nintendo to get more studios working on more games such as F-Zero, Star Fox and Wave Race etc
I want to see a new Exite Truck or Bike with track editor, also they need to beef up the VC, they could be raking in money off of that with N64 and Gamecube titles, I would download Metroid Prime Trilogy in a heart beat, can't wait for Metroid Fusion from the GBA though.

Wii U's marketing in general has been disastrous. |
I'd feel safe in saying that marketing is the main reason the Wii U is struggling. Advertisement is few and far between, and when they do it's not impactful in the least. I've never seen a company so reluctant in creating buzz for their product. It's border line criminal.
"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

Looks like you didn't get my post. It was a direct proposition to the OP. He apparently likes Nintendo as a developer but not as a pulisher. So my question was if he would like to see the development teams under new management aka other publishers(Ubi or SEGA for example.
This has nothing to do with Nintendo's financial situation. It was just a hypothetical question.
