Actually isn't a bad idea. Make *new* business off of iOS games as a way to diversify revenue streams and idea-farm for games to go upstream, but never pull anything downstream.

Exactly.
I've actually been thinking about this for awhile now. With the advent of all these great new indie games, it seems like a great time for Nintendo to dip into that well themselves because, who is better at making small, cheap, interesting and original IP than Nintendo? Have we ever seen anything more creative than what they were able to do with a small group of developers during the NES birth? And isn't that EXACTLY the sort of thing they like do to? They have always been extremely conservative. How much can an indie or ios game cost? Certainly pennies compared to what they spend on their full 3D titles.
I really think they're missing out on a great opportunity here.
