Forums - Gaming - Is 2D Platformers still worth $60?

I've yet to find any indie game whose quality is similar to a top-notch 2D platformer. Even the best indie platformers (Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV, etc.) aren't up to snuff.

Is VVVVVV supposed to be one of the best indie platformers?  I played the demo of that game, and came away completely unimpressed.  It probably wouldn't even make the list of the 50 best internet flash games I have ever played.  If that is the state of indie platformers, that is really sad.

Wow.

That sounded really harsh, and now I kind of feel bad.  But it is also true, so...

VVVVVV is an amazng game. However I wouldn't call it a "platformer". I've not played Super Meat Boy so can't comment on that. But Thomas Was Alone and Spelunky on Vita were both great experiences. Not quite up there with the Nintendo games, but still worthy in their own right.

As someone who bought Rayman Origins day one, I can say that yes it is. Indie devs can create similar experiences through gameplay, but they can't match the production values in my opinion. I just look at something like the recent Rayman games and it's pretty unmatched in the world of 2D gaming. The closest I can think of is Dust and even that wasn't what I thought it would be in the cutscenes. It came across as a good quality, but small budget and straight to VHS experience from my childhood. Not to mention it takes forever to get out. It's kind of my gamer's dream to see a truly 2D game that has that level of production value that you'd see in a classic Disney movie. Don't know if it'll ever happen, but I am glad that Rayman released on retail. People think way too much of 2D = cheap. It's a high skilled base time consuming process and is often more expensive than people realize.

Sighhh, I hate to pay $55 (plus tax) cause Canadian dollars is lolz :(

But yea, if TitanFall can get away with charging $60 for multiplayer only experience, DK is defiantly worth it

If you don't like multiplayer it's hard to justify the price like anything else.

But multiplayers are easy to get your money worth if you're talking about content, challenge and FUN.

Plus Titanfall has a multiplayer campaign mode, so your point is kinda moot. I'd rather pay $60 bucks for Titanfall than DKC or Rayman, I know I'll be playing Titanfall almost everyday until the release of Halo, what about Rayman?

DKC and Rayman give me more hours of entertainment than most of these sophisticated games lack nowadays.

Agreed.

DKCR gave me some of the most bang for my buck of any 7th gen game.

No 2D platformer is worth $60. Even with Mario or Donkey Kong.

This...

i won't be playing Titanfall, but multiplayer's MARKET VALUE is undeniable.  You just can't say that about platformers.  And for a game like DKC to be compared to a 99cent smartphone game or a Vita handheld game, echoes those sentiments...

I am not saying TitanFall is a bad game by any means, I was playing the beta every chance I get and its the most fun I have had with a first person shooter in a while, but all I am saying is TitanFall is still a multiplayer experience at its heart, you cannot have fun with only one person even on the multiplayer campeign (least from what I can tell) so it is still technically a multiplayer experience, just like how Destiny will be as well but many people don't like that... In the eyes for a lot of people (maybe not in this site but on a few other sites), a fps game that is $60 has to have at least a single player offline campaign in order to justify the purchase and carrying the game on multiplayer alone and that an arcade style fps with mechs is not worth $60 since you can get a game like Hawken for only $10-$20 which also has mechs (its an example, I know they arent 100% same type of game) but for many TitanFall is enough so on that baises alone, I think dkc are also worth $60 to many people, cause the wealth of content, secrets, time trailers and etc that the single player offers is enough for people

TL:DR I think TitanFall is great for $60 but so is DKC in their own ways is all I am trying to say

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

imo any low bugdet game shouldnt be that expensive even if the quality is top notch.

Considering most $60 games of all genres aren't worth the price of admission, I'd have to say HELL NO! lol

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

In the end it's how much people are willing to pay.

But, people that think Titanfall won't sell solely on the basis that it doesn't have single player mode, should check COD sales.

COD sells basically on their multiplayer experiences, you don't hear anybody talking about COD campaign or BF.
