Disagree. One of the things I love most about console gaming is not having to set up and optimise the visuals. I just want to play the game the way the developers intended me to.

totally agree. There should be some choices you can make.
Since the hardware is the same there should be a menu where you can make changes (not even huge ones but something like 720p/900p/1080p, shadows, lighting, draw distance etc.) and then see the average FPS value calculated at the bottom.

Developer settings would be the default anyway. Where's the problem ?
It's not about optimizing, it's about having a personal preference.

yeah exactly, i play on consoles because i dont' like fucking around with all those settings. i just want to put a game in a play. let the devs deliver the best experience they can but don't waste time/resources/money adding features on 6 people will give a fuck about.
That's not a bad idea at all. It won't happen but it would be nice to have a slider bar or had multiple choice settings with explanations.
Most console gamers wouldn't touch them, though, which is probably why it would be considered an unnecessary expense. Developers and publishers are probably also afraid it would make them look bad, that they couldn't perfectly hit their targets.
In the end, it's just wishful thinking.

the 3rd equation is graphics. fewer effects and slightly more compressed textures could allow 1080p+60fps. Clearly that is some people actually want.
But I'm with the guys who want the experience to be decided by the developers. I've never made a fuss about a games resolution if its at least 720p. Nor have I ever complainrf about a stable frame rate regardless of whether its 30fps or 60fps. I simply know that to change either of these things will come at the expense of something else. In cases where there is no strong case for either (An RPG which doesnt need 60fps), I guess an option for those with a preference would be nice.
I wonder if the next gen will have full 1080p 60fps... Than again, that might not be too much of a plus in the era of 4k
PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850
I'm fine with tweaking my PC and I'm fine with my console games being optimized.
What if the devs had an option in the menu for PS4 games. Left everything else the same, but for games that could hit 1080p@30fps, allow an option to change everything to 720p@60fps. Then save changes and the game would use hardware scaling to scale 720p to 1080p, so not native, but run at 60fps.
Resolution/Framerate:
1080p@30fps / 720p@60fps
So the only two options and if you change one you have to change the other.
If anyone remembers. Saints Row 2 allowed you to turn V Sync on or off. I don't think it hit framerate at all with how poor the graphics were so it didn't matter.
