It's rather pointless to use them. Got through the entire game 100% on hard without purchasing a single SP. Not only is it a shameless money-grabbing practice imo, but you get enough SP by just resting the console (and you'll be resting it a lot in order to rebuild Norende).

Alas, Bravely Second becomes only a quick "rescue me" mode on the latter stages of the game if things go sour in some of the optional boss battles.
