Bummer, but have you gone through the steps to fix it? One is like turning it on while holding down the power button, then the fans turn on in high power in reverse. You may have some accumulated dust from not using it.

There are also steps where you may have to replace the thermal past. Good luck.

After it froze I couldn't get any video output when I turned it back on.  I also couldn't turn it off normally.  After about and hour and a half it turned on normally and output video.  I turned it back off after a few minutes.  I'm worried I'll make it worse by playing it until the gpu freezes up again.

Mine was fixed for 3 -4 months until it happened again. After doing it 3 times I broke an incredibly important rare screw that completely fucked everything. So I bought a slim.

There are so many different things that could be causing that.  Even sometimes a loose chip.  Wish you still had some kind of warrantee.

Here is a thread from a while ago about a friend's old PS3 Fat.  There are several suggestions.  It might be worth looking at:  http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=167255&page=1

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

If you have a backlog, get a used PS3 (They sell for $170 on EB Games).

If not, get DS2 for PC, and save for a PS4.

Not planning on buying any more ps3 games after dks2, however I'd like the ability to play all my old games.  I'm very hesitant to buy any used hardware bc you can never trust sellers.

Dark Souls 2 pvp community will be 10X better on psn.

Then get Dark Souls 2 for PC for now, and wait a year or two for a cheap Holiday sale. PS3 will come down in price before they discontinue it.

I'm leaning towards the opposite.  Fixing my ps3 and playing it as long as I can, then getting it on pc down the road.

reminds me of an Atari2600 game I used to play... Jesus tho I'm really sorry to hear this, saying that you can get a PS3 now second hand for around the 100euros mark so it's slightly less of a downer if you got some spare cash, very unlikely you'll get 2 duff PS3's in your life given their failure rate, you've had your bad luck :)

Ha guess how long my first ps3 lasted...  15 minutes, I had to return it because the fans weren't working.  I wish they made a backwards compatable ps4 which seems perfect for my situation.

I still to this date have not had a PS3 go out on me. I sell them after they get 2-2.5 years old due to increased risk of them going out.

When Sony announced the PS3 was dropping to 250$ the next day I put the PS3 I had on craigslist for 220$ the next day someone messaged me about buying it and I sold it for 220$ then I used that (and my friend was working at Walmart so I used their Walmart card for 10% off) so I got rid of a 2ish year old PS3 for a brand new one for around 25$.

I still doubt it will happen but a PS4 and Xbox One port is not impossible

Soak it in gas overnight and light it on fire the next day.

Update

Figured out my ps3 has the GLOD (green light of death). I'm not sure I will be able to fix it, or for very long if I can. I found a new ps3 super slim 12gb for $180 (+ Free Shipping) on ebay. I'd like to swap my old hard drive into the new super slim, how would I go about doing that without erasing all my games/saves?
