I owned both Wii and DS last gen, which both were a phenomenal success for Nintendo. They had unique selling points, be it touch screen,dual screen or motion controls and both boasted a brilliant diverse library of games. However, im now into the next gen of Nintendo hardware with Wii U/3 DS combo, both which many will say are extensions of their previous hardware. 

I have to say that i am actually enjoying the Wii U/3DS combo more than Wii/DS, even though both are still relatively young in their lifespans. I think both have evolved well from their previous iterations and are solid pieces of hardware. 3DS library has so far eclipsed the DS in my opinion, with Nintendo really putting out quite a lot of solid first party titles, stereo 3D, whilst not essential does immerse you in certain games and adds some lovely eye candy. The Wii U i love, its becoming one of my fave Nintendo consoles. The gamepad, whilst not having the same hook as the wiimote is a much better gaming tool for me as a gamer. It has enabled me to have unique gaming experiences like Zombi U, W101, Ninty land and off tv play is great. I can also experience games such as AC, Batman, Mass Effect, Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs etc games that were not possible on Wii.  Both machines both benefit from much improved online facilties and Miiverse and the Eshops are of high quality, the latter boasting great indie support.

Forget sales, i f you are lucky enough to have owned all the systems mentioned, which combo has worked best for you as a gamer??

I think wiiU/3ds combo... The 3ds has better games than the ds did imo and the wiiU's games aren't looking too bad either with a new Mario Kart (which looks awesome) and Smash Bros as well as X and etc

The wii/ds were great but if you forget sales, I think wiiU/3ds is better even though I loved Metroid Prime 3 and Galaxy 1&2, Brawl, and etc

I wasn't too much of a fan of the ds but I think ALBW > DS Zelda games

Wii U/3DS, loved my Wii last generation but never had much interest in the DS. The Wii U and 3DS are awesome.

I find you only need one or the other. Unless you have ALOT of free time and/or are rich as hell, you don't have time/money for both. You can buy the 3DS and be happy with a console or you could do it visa versa and be content.

I've used my 3DS far more than I ever used my DS. And while I don't own a Wii U yet, it won't take much for me to prefer it to the Wii. This year's lineup looks great.

WiiU/3DS. Both are better consoles, not based on raw power but how they are designed, they have a more traditional approach for menus/games, more useful tools and apps, I really like the WiiU interface. It's one of the best I've seen. It felt like Wii had too few, with limited options and too extraterrestrial game intros.

Right now the poll is 20 v 0 which is interesting given the sales difference that is counter to that.

I echo others, I was never crazy about the DS as it was like reliving going from SNES to N64 again (shudders). The 3DS is more like the GameCube which is a big plus to me. I would say right now Wii and Wii U are even, but Wii U could easily surpass it by mid to end 2015.

I don't actually have a Wii U yet, but I still think it's safe to say I'll be on the 3DS/Wii U ship since I like the 3DS better than the DS.

Had a lot more games on DS than I do on 3DS. I also don't own a WiiU. Wii/DS combo for me.
