Forums - Gaming - Why I think this could be the last console gen. Has nothing to do with sales

2 out of the 3 new/next gen console came out setting record numbers = Doomed doomed i tells you lol.

That has nothing to do with my argument. Do you believe people which are currently buying PS4s are kids who played mobile games? no they are not. The people who are buying PS4s are the so called "hardcore gamers" who grew up playing NES, SNES, PS1.

The kids I'm speaking off are still very young, that's why I'm not saying this gen is doomed, is the next one. And like I already said, "hradcore" gaming might simple become a niche market.

Again, none of this matters. What matters is what's considered "cool" and if it's between candy crush and COD? COD is going to win.

Even if gaming as we know it becomes a niche market, I'm sure it will still be large enough for a while to stay alive for generations to come. I don't think any hardcore gamers are dying anytime soon. If we keep throwing money at the machine, it will stay alive.

All 3 console makers did really well last gen. And apart from Nintendo (who is not out of the race yet), Sony and ms are breaking console sales records. This is well into the mobile gaming platforms taking hold with kids. I think mobile gaming is actually a gateway into console gaming and kids will upgrade to consoles. I know you said you are not considering sales in your OP, but the sales speak for themselves. I would be surprised if consoles go away anytime soon. There is room for them to exist alongside PC and mobile gaming.

I think you somewhat underestimate the desire of children to move on to bigger and cooler experiences. Let's say you have a boy playing on his iPhone when a Battlefield 7 video comes on the television. He will want that. Explosions, tanks, machine guns--he's going to want that. Angry Birds Zeta isn't going to replicate that.

There will be customers lost, no doubt. I think Nintendo, because their style of game is generally less complex, will see the biggest falloff, but even then their depth and quality will still brings in an audience.

If home consoles go away, it will be because of technological developments, not a lack of interest. One day people might be able to hook their phones to a tv and a controller and stream games, for example. However, I just can't see the audience for experiences like Halo, CoD, or Uncharted just disappearing.

There are already games being developed and sold on the App Store that are akin to CoD/Battlefield. They aren't as fleshed out, but they are getting there.

What console makers need to do is evolve with the market if this happens. Sony is doing a pretty good job at this (integrating social media, streeming, online stores.) Nintendo is starting to do this with their VC/eShop/Netflix/Hulu as well. It's not just physical games anymore.

I would also like to point out that Facebook is going downhill. None of my friends use Facebook (I'm a High Schooler), they've jumped ship to Twitter and Vine. Neither of these have games built in. I realise that's somewhat anecdotal, but it's true. Remember when everyone jumped ship from Myspace to Facebook? Well, it's happening again.

You don't know anything!

I do agree that there will be bleed, I just don't think it will kill traditional games.  Children want things.  That's like their official function, wanting things.  Sure, they might have all 10,000 Pokemon but when they see a friend with Pokemon 10,001, they want that Pokemon, too.  Children getting into gaming is good because they want more and more.  A $15 FPS game might be good but when they see Halo 9, they will want that.  It's bigger and better.  Kids don't care about price.

As for evolving, I agree with that, as well.  Game consoles probably won't disappear, they'll just become something else.  They'll be integrated.  One day you can probably decide if you want the Xbox, Nintendo, or Playstation app, or maybe even all of them, just like video services.

Big budget games are going to continue making money because people keep looking for the best experiences.

I think smartphones, tablets and streaming will do to console gaming what cell phone cameras have done to real cameras, or what newer music mediums have done to vinyl. There will always be a market, but it will become niche and even more catered to the serious hobbyists, or "hardcore."

I agree with you. my sister's kids are no older then seven and that's all they seem to play. I think the oldest one has a regular ds,but it's always mobile games on my sister's phone are leap frog. I can see what your saying, from first hand experience.that's what the next generation is going to grow up one. There's wasn't all these options when I was a kid. There was no tablets/smart phones, etc.

We had game & watch :)
Most of our gaming was done on msx, pc, c64 and Amiga though.

As I got older I got more and more into gaming on larger screens with bigger sound. Why would kids nowadays stick with mobile gaming. Dedicated handhelds will be in trouble but I think consoles will be fine. Maybe when you can plug your vr headset straight into your phone, streaming lag free 4K games over 5G, it might be time to start worrying.

If consoles keeps selling, they're going to keep making new consoles. Not until people stop buying them, will they stop making them.
