There's stilll great stuff today, but the mainstream is much worse than decades ago.

Main stream music has sucked since the 80's, and that's ignorring the entire genre of disco from the 70's.  We've had Back Street Boys & a dozen different variations, we've had the Spice Girls & a dozen different variations, we've had Billy Ray Cyrus & a wave of "New Country" fecal matter.  Aron Carter, Brittany Spears, MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli & a bunch of cookie cutter crap just like it all the way up to American Idol.

I've done a bad job but I'm trying to illustrate how the mainstream music "industry" has been crap for 30 or 40 years.

Ok, I'm not thingking about Aaron Carter or the Spice Girls...

You can always find negative examples, but where are the positive examples of great mainstream artists today?

I think that some of the most successful artists of earlier decades are among the best artists of that time. That isn't the case anymore.

Not sure if those are the best examples, but I'm thinking about The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Queen, Van Halen, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Run-D.M.C. or even Michael Jackson until 'Bad'. These were all mainstream successes.

Some of those band still release new albums, but they're mostly crap.

Okay, yes, there may be more examples from the past that we can point to as mainstream artists who were actually good, but that's kind of the hindsight is 20/20 argument.  In thirty years there will be current mainstream artists that will be praised and held up as examples of how great music was in the 200x's / teens, but those artists will be greatly in the minority, as they always have been, to the total number of recording artist.

Since others are listing some of their favs I'll do the same

Titus Andronicus

Jack White

The New Pornographers / AC Newman

The Flaming Lips

Animal Collective (some)

Sufjan Stevens

I doubt that. Many of the successful pop artists of the early 2000's are already forgotten.

Maybe it's because there are no more big revolutions in music, almost everything that is thinkable has already been done.

I agree with that last statement.

Queens Of The Stone Age's last album "Like Clockwork" was pure ear candy. Beck if your into him has a new one coming out as well and while it is more mellow the first two songs are pretty good.

" Rebellion Against Tyrants Is Obedience To God"

Linking park? bad taste confirmed

I liked there old stuff more. it was way more heavy. that seems to be the forumula for rock bands. they start out heavy, then they become mainstream and it's all watered down rock pop. lol

99% of everything is crap. I assure you 99% of music from all times was crap. Most of the crap simply isn't passed down to future generations. Will you introduce your kids to the wonders of the Bieber? If not, they won't even know he existed, and they'll only know the good music from our generation. And they'll think our music was amazing and 99% of their music is crap.

I agree, there are also instances of bands that aren't poular in their time becoming popular once people discover them years later.

There's also the issue that the farther back you go, the less likely a lousy band would be to even be recorded. Nowadays, anyone can record an album. But 80 years ago? How about all the shitty baroque composers whose works were buried beneath the legacy of Bach and the like?

I think my big problem is how lyrics & sound has deteriorated from even the 90s to now.

Key example...Mariah Carey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IA3ZvCkRkQ

Powerful, graceful video, inspirational, incredible song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toOlPqXW75A

Awful whiny lyrics, video based around showing "body", cheap production

What happened? Other artists show similar deterioration coming into the 00's & now 2010's

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

There is just as much great music these days as there always has been, perhaps even more. There's just an awful lot more crap drowning it out too :P

99% of games are crap too. 99% of movies are crap too. 99% of soccer clubs are crap too.

When the selection is so large, it is not hard for 99% to be crap.

I recently heard Rebecca Black-Saturday which is actually pretty good.
