Forums - Sales - January 2014 NPD Thread! - PS4: 271k, XBO: 141k, WiiU: 49k

I get all the doom on here but it really shouldn't shock anyone.

-PS4 is doing good numbers. Problem is that they somehow are still getting outsold in terms of software when compared to Xbox One. People are buying them for future releases, which will eat into their console sales when those games come out. Sony needs to figure out how to produce more. Every month it's "Well there is a shortage". It sold about 250k, if they can't even handle that then how are they ever going to get up to 100 million lifetime like people are claiming.

-Xbox One is too expensive and Microsoft screwed themselves by taking a big dump on gamers. Forced Kinect. Tried to implement anti-consumer policies. Cost's $100 more yet is somehow weaker then the PS4.

-Wii U need's some games that people actually give a crap about. No one gives a shit about Pikmin. No one gives a shit about Wonderful 101. No one gives a shit about Wind Waker HD. People want Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Zelda, and an actual innovative new Mario game. You know what would be even nicer, any games at all. Releasing a game once a quarter while the 3DS gets piles of support of a load of garbage.

-3DS......Well it did good for a while but here's the reality. When your the good version, of your console is $199 and all of your games are sequels, it's not going to sell 100 million consoles. Period. Especially in this day and age with tablets and smartphones. The fact that it is at 43 million in itself is amazing. Pushing another 40 million, though? Good luck at that price with those games.

-Vita - There are no games anyone in the U.S. wants. U.S. gamers don't care about Sony's 1st party games. That was evident on the PS3, it just got covered up because Call of Duty and GTA were so huge, along with a bunch of other 3rd party titles doing very good numbers as well. The 3rd Party support is all Japanese and if it isn't it's just ports. Unless Sony can convince Rockstar to make a GTA for it (which I highly doubt), it's finished.

Thats MS Spin, Xbox one and Xbox 360 outsold the PS4+PS3 in software sales, typical Microsoft, PS4 sold more game than the XBox One *Simples*

So, people still believe the 3DS didn't peak in 2012?

Bad month for pretty much everything that's not called PS4. PS3 and Xbox360 are dying quicker then anyone could have imagined. WiiU is up when stabilized to a 4week month (2013 saw an average of 11.4k per week while 2014 saw an average of 12.5k), which is horrible because last year numbers WERE horrible. 3DS down (although we don't know the exact sales yet). Xbox one doing significantly less then 360 at the same point in time.

This is bad and anyone who loves consoles and handhelds SHOULD be worried.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

What the shit happened this month? PS3 > 360 why? (I realise 360 should've hit saturation a long time ago, but it kept chugging along and beating PS3 for as long as I can remember).

WiiU numbers even worse than we'd thought. Down in both Japan & USA YoY now (and I can't see things going well in Europe for Nintendo). Yes, Nintendo consoles are mostly seasonal, but the same applied last year. Damn, guys.

Tearaway... seems tracked correct. Vita hardware too. Hey, good job VGC!

(Need to work on your Wii Fit U tracking, though).

And PS4, I don't really know what to think. The numbers seem good if supply is still an issue, but I dunno. February is going to be an interesting one; as is watching for an InFAMOUS boost in March.

Oh and this is just a small request on my part (and I doubt anyone will take notice, but I can only try).

Can you link to the Creamsugar posts when you're sharing his numbers? Makes this thread so much easier to promote as evidence if we're using it to call for adjustments later (which I have done a few times in the past with software, not so much with hardware).

To everyone saying that no one could have imagined that the 3DS peaked in 2013 and that the PS3 and 360 would collapse very quickly; yes, there were some who could and even kept saying it on the forums for a long time.

More OT: the PR spin is hilarious, as always.

wow, PS3 over X360 too? Damn! I never would have expected that.

People should not compare blindly this numbers with 2007 for a few reasons...

a) January 2007 consisted in 5 weeks, January 2014 consisted in 4 weeks
b) PS2 was its 7th January in USA, X360 is its 9th January and for Wii and PS3 its 8th
c) 7th gen sales were a lot more frontloaded than 6th gen
d) PS4 sold less than Wii in 2007 because it already sold A LOT MORE in November and December, there is just not enough stock to sell in January. Sony took January shipments to sell in December.
e) Xbox One sold less than X360 in 2006 for the same reason a "d"

And respecting the doom for this new gen, i think is not true. People just want to buy one console that is not available yet. I will made an example to explain myself:
-You have 1000 consumers that want to buy a next gen console
-From that 1000, 100 want a WiiU, 200 a Xbox One and 700 want a PS4.
-Nintendo can sell you 200, Microsoft can sell you 300 and Sony can sell you only 300.
-Nintendo and Microsoft despite of stock only sell 100 and 200 because there is not more demand, but PS4 sells only half what he could have sold.
-So basically you're only selling 600 total, but you could have sold that 1000 numbers if there was enough ps4.

That's what I think just happened in January. We just need to wait next months if next gen is really doomed or not.

Edit: What are really doomed are handhelds....there's not other way to see it.

bad Xbox One and terrible WiiU numbers.

Titanfall can't come soon enough.

XB1 34% overtracked in US. Can it be that bad in europe as well?
