Forums - Nintendo - My impressions of Pokemon X (After skipping pokemon for 10 years)

I'm an RPG fan and I don't like it.  Most people who like Pokemon have played less than 10 RPGs in their life, half of them being Pokemon titles.  So they're like, "Hey.  Pokemon is the fifth best RPG I've played.  Such a great series!"

I know you shouldn't have to qualify everything you say as an opinion, but if you're gonna quantify something like you did this post, you better be prepared to have this misinterpreted. I'm sure you'll find plenty of traditional RPG fans that enjoy the Pokemon franchise.

@OP: I'm of the same mind as you for the most part.I lost interest after Ruby, and skipped every game after that. I got Y version as a Christmas gift, and really enjoyed this one. I think what got me was how free it feels. After reaching the route with the Daycare and Battle House (whatever it's called), I started just diversifying my team and started testing out different Pokemon and different move combinations. I found my ideal way to play was with two members from my main team, two from an alternate team, and whichever two I felt like testing out at the time. It's enjoyable how the game gives you so many different ways to play through it. Using the same team would be much easier, but I feel like experimenting this way is much more rewarding.

Are you kidding me?  The ridiculousness of the claim that I know what people have played.  It's a joke.  Not only are there more than 10 RPGs on just the 3DS, but there are several different systems and several different generations to go through.

The same thing could be said of many games that have single player and multiplayer, seriously man.

And what about other RPGs?  You can use the same 3 characters in Final Fantasy XII a beat the game without any kind of strategy (Not bashing, FFXII is one of my favorites RPG) Golden Sun series offer a Djinn system in which you can assign a certain number of Djinn to the main characters, different combinations of Djinn enable different classes, but in the same way you can beat the game with the default combination of Djinn for each character. Even if you can beat the two games I mentioned without strategy, they offer many posibbilities in party creation.

It feels a lot different in Pokemon.  In Pokemon, you'll be completing entire gyms in single player with one or two Pokemon.  If you can one shot every gym members Pokemon with an attack that does normal damage there's absolutely no need to bother to change party members to finish the battle any faster.  By changing members and attempting to use any strategy, you're actually taking longer to defeat your opponent in Pokemon.  In Pokemon the attacks even when animations are off take a long time, changing out your Pokemon takes a long time.  Literally everything is slow in Pokemon and when the difficulty is as easy as it is, it makes for a much worse experience.  If they're going to have some brain dead difficulty atleast speed up the battles.

For your question in comparison.  Putting  forth some additional strategy in your average RPG is actually benefitting you to finish it more quickly.  Some games may not require you to do so and can be completed regardless, but they add a noticeable benefit by doing so.  Very rarely is there an RPG that you go to new areas and one shot every opponent you come across.

I think you missed my point. What I'm saying is that in the same manner that in other RPG, Pokemon offer strategy as a form of gameplay is up to you if you use it or not.

As you said you can one shot everything is your pokemon is overleved, but if you focus on your training two or three pokemons you end up missing a huge part of what pokemon games are about. For example, I tried to catch a lot of pokemon to see which I liked better (ended up with the same oldies, but that's just me). If you think that is a wate of time, then almost everything gaming is a waste of time too. Pokemon games are about adventuring and experimenting with your party members (at least to me). What I think is that maybe they are not for you and that's ok.

Why don't you make like a tree and get out of here?

I knew you were joking, don't worry. Its just that I've seen you complain a few times about how some people take your opinion posts as anything more than that. Putting a quantitative claim in a qualitative statment certaintly won't help with that. I understand it was a joke, but I'm not necessarily in the majority.

I didn't miss your point.  It's obvious what you're talking about, but hey, let me just switch this level 5 Pokemon where I'm at because the game is unable to balance itself out.  If  I'm going through the game, catching Pokemon and using the ones that I feel will be best for my party then unless another Pokemon interests me I'm not going to use that one just to limit myself.

The game should be properly developed.  I shouldn't have to work to make a game more fun.  But clearly I didn't try and put enough time into the end game to give it far more of a chance than it deserved.  Doing most of the side content which were part of my Pokemon team build, boring as hell endless battle tournament thing for points, boring as hell egg hatching, boring as hell watching for eggs.

This picture shows I beat it as quickly as I could, I got as few Pokemon as I could, and I spent no time in the end game.  Oh wait.  No it doesn't.  Kloude City.  Hmm.  Isn't that the place you have to go back to Luminous City before you are told you can take a train to a new city that you can't reach otherwise.  Never would have figured that out if I didn't continue playing the game more right?  Wouldn't have known there was that stupid battle coliseum.

I mean what the fuck.  Do people attempt to downplay everyone that has a differing opinion because they like the game?  Oh.  You didn't like the game.  You just didn't play through it enough, you must have rushed through, you didn't beat the game, you didn't play it how it was supposed to be played, etc, etc, etc.  So many excuses that people make just oh noes.  Someone doesn't throw a constant amount of praise at the game and they're bashing the game for legitimate reasons that we ignore solely because it's a franchise on our favorite console!  :( :( :( :O :O :O.  And no.  It's not just Nintendo fans.  I've said plenty of things towards Sony releases, said plenty of things towards Microsoft releases.  The game may have some deep underlying gameplay but that doesn't disregard all the other faults it has, which clearly many of you are completely ignoring, deflecting those faults with excuses on why you should give the game a free pass.

I'm not downplaying your opinion. Like I said maybe pokemon games are not for you, and I'm perfectly ok with it :P. I actually enjoyed training and trying to make my favorite pokemons strong enough (too bad if you feel like is a development issue). At no point I said that you didn't play the game, come on man.

And WTF at bringing console wars into this thread XD

It's always about console wars.  Always.  I'm j/k.  I'm more of a Sony fan and I know someone would eventually bring it up.  and that's yet another excuse people like to bring up about why people don't like certain games, so I thought I'd make mention of "it's not because it's Nintendo" since it's not.

Well, I'm mainly a Nintento fan (for Zelda and Fire Emblem) but currently supporting PS3DS because of mmm games haha.

I agree with you in something, Pokemon X (and Y I guess) is hardly a flawless game, but I actually enjoyed some things that you pointed out as issues. Sorry I you felt like I was downplaying your posts.

I complain a lot when talking about something I don't like.  I might have blown it out of proportion.

I'm in the same boat as you. Stopped after gen 3, heard about gen 1 starters with mega evolutions and liked the fire starter and the 3D graphics so I gave it another shot. Thought it was great, second most played game after Fire Emblem. You and I have similar tastes, sir...

I also agree that the HM thing is stupid. However, I do like using your Pokemon to do things outside of battle, because it makes them feel more important, like the partnership between human and Pokemon goes beyond battling. So I think instead they should just make it so that any Pokemon that can learn an HM automatically knows it, but you can only use them outside of battle, and only if you have enough badges. That way, you still get to unlock the moves, you don't take up move slots, they just act as abilities instead, and it makes getting more badges satisfying because really, how often do you use traded Pokemon and have them disobey you? Never. And come on, if a Pokemon with wings is able to carry you around, why do you have to teach it a move to let it do that? It should be a matter of it being willing to carry you around. They could put a restriction based on number of badges, but also one on friendship, making friendship more rewarding as well. It would allow them to put a much greater variety of HM abilities without worrying about forcing the player to give up too many Pokemon moves.
