Forums - Gaming - Amazon Acquires Video Gaming Studio Double Helix Games

Woah, so they're, like, in this for real? Holy shit! These next few years are gonna be interesting.

This is a less than impressive first move by Amazon. I had to look these guys up, and well, I guess I liked Earthworm Jim 20 years ago.

Could be interesting but if this Amazon console tanks, its quite damaging to Double Helix. And Killer Instinct is screwed since while MS owns the IP, Double Helix owns the game content. And the Amazon console is going to have a difficult time with no IPs of its own

I really don't think that's how it works. If DH is not able to work on the Killer Instinct game, Microsoft could just have one of their other studios (or a different 3rd party) continue supporting that game for DLC or whatever else they have planned for it.

Generally when you own an IP you own everything about that game.

I worded that poorly. I should have said something more along the lines of the engine(since its Double Helix's own engine) so Killer Instinct can only be updated by Double Helix. if Amazon doesn't allow them to work of Season 2 of Killer Instinct, it'll never get done. I think Double Helix owns the rights to the original character too. Microsoft would have to make a new killer Instinct post season 2 DLC pretty much if they want to turn it into stable pillar of their library

Still worded it poorly. MS owns KI property. Outside of characters that were not in the original games im not sure. We would have to find out the contract details. How long they were contracted for and whatnot.

If they buy Sega thus get a hold of Atlus.............oh boy

lol they bought a small team with an ok track record. No reason to expect them to go after much larger publishers and dev teams.

1: Amazon is Rich

2: Heavy rumors of their own console

3: Its has been heard they've beeen collecting people of gaming talent for the past two years from microsoft and other places

4: They buy DHG.

I think its reasonable to think they know they need to buy some big tier studious to be taken seriously. Sega and Platinum games and the world will cry and acknowledge them.

I wouldn't write off Double Helix so quickly too, it looks like they do good work when they are not working on contract-based movie adaptations that are likely done under a time crunch.

Much like Next Level Games that does much better work for Nintendo but has made mediocre licensed games in the past.

This will be really fun to watch.

Getting bought means somone actually saw value in that company.

Its better than just going bankrupt.

If Amazon releases a gaming Kindle with physical controls ... it's so f*cking on.

It's freaking crazy how much of the game business centers around Seattle ... Microsoft (XBox), Nintendo (Wii/DS), Valve (Steambox), and Amazon (Kindle Console?) are all there, lol.

Apparently Amazon has been poaching talent from Microsoft's game studios in Seattle for a while.

1-4 do not mean they are going to go out and buy big guys like SEGA. Let's do the same for Microsoft.

1: Microsoft is super rich

2: Have their own console

3: Regularly collect people of gaming talent from Sony and other places.

4: They bought Press Play.

No one expects Microsoft to buy SEGA or Platinum lol.

The difference is Microsoft is already established in the market. They already have a lot of first party studios. Amazon does not so they will be more proactive in getting some good  first party studios.

Microsoft are more worried about pumping out exclusives from their current 1st partys to survive the PS4 onslaught. Amazon are more worried about actually getting some good first party studios lest they want to be obliterated on arrival.  Which is why its more probable for them to do this bold move than Microsoft

Those are my 5 cents
