Forums - Sales - It's not Xbox One versus PS4

I agree... it is Xbone vs Wii U.

PS4 runs it own league.

No no no. Do you forget that the Wii U isn't getting any ports? If the difference between XBONE and PS4 becomes large enough, lots of games will be PS4 exclusive by default.

What?

Even the original Xbox got decent 3rd party support during the PS2 era, also, what of the Wii last gen?

It's not that the XBONE won't get decent 3rd party support, but that the PS4 could get lots of 3rd party exclusives. The Wii last gen shows my point too. Just because a publisher could get a few more sales by releasing on another system, that doesn't mean they'll make the port. The OP is saying these guys are so hungry for money that the XBONE will always and forever get every 3rd party game unless someone pays them not too.

Wii shows your point? The Wii boomed last gen and left the 360 in the dust. The PS3 wasn't out yet, for another yearish when the Wii launched. It is even a bigger gap where they potentially could have sold more by looking at the figures.

By 2008 the Wii was nearly outselling both combined in total and did more than that for the year of 2008.

Wii 24,188,263 (+46%) 43,696,333
X360 10,913,123 (+38%) 26,772,474
PS3 10,204,758 (+29%) 19,378,853

Yes the Wii dominated early on. This shows my point because many 3rd parties still didn't publish for it. For many reasons they were content with the other systems. I wasn't looking at the situation of Wii=PS4 and PS360=XBONE. It's Wii=XBONE and PS360=PS4. The OP's whole point is that games are too expensive so devs have to support every platform. My point is that time and time again we see games skipping systems even when the port would have probably broken even.

Looking at this gen if the difference becomes large enough between the two, many devs will be content supporting just the PS4. Lots will support both too. Just looking at Japan where we know there will be a huge gap. Can't you see a considerable amount of games just releasing on PS4?

I think a good proportion of game developers are also gamers themselves who enjoy console and / or pc gaming. There will always be people willing to develop 'big budget' games. Third party developers will probably expand into the mobile market but I think it would be ludicrous to say that they will abandon consoles for the mobile market.

I personally think this is just some ill conceived attempt at discrediting the ps4's recent dominance. Oh well.

Ratchet Nexus felt like a nice return to the start of the gen and a little bit fresh (despite being exactly the same) especially if you skipped the crap ones!

Yeah, I do feel that gaming is falling apart. A strong PS4 and XB1 are probably good, but I still don't think it is going to end all that well. Just look at the percentage of the total sales of all HD games that were taken up by FIFA, CoD, AC and GTA. I haven't checked the numbers myself, but I am going to suggest that it is an alarmingly large percentage.

The problem is, the market for most games has not grown at anywhere near the growth of their budgets and that's a problem that's not going away

also the price has stayed the same since the NES era about while production costs have continued to grow.  Some devs know how to manage their money though.  Infamous hasn't sold AMAINGLY but it remains profitable enough to make sequels.

Just about. It's still not very healthy is it when a game requires 2-3m sales. More developers need better control like Sucker Punch (and ND are quite cheap). They also need to reduce marketing budgets, since it's absurd that they often spend as much on that as they do on the actual game

The real reason is the new wave about "fps". The people see more frames on Ps4 and believe that only reason for said is better. Xone have and will have games amazing....On Ps4 a few games real we have. But this generation the reality is that the people not see the games (Sometimes it seems that they do not care that there is not much Catalog) , see the numbers and frames frames frames.

Uhm, Wii and PS3 launched at the same time (nov 2006). Only europe/pal had to wait ~3 more month for PS3 launch.

Wii U VS PS4

Zelda - Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch.... Incredable!!!

Then an aligned launch goes further to discredit why PS4 would get more 3rd party exclusives than the Xbox One.

It seemed so long here in Australia... 3 months? Wow! My mistake!!
