Ur right in theory a hefty price cut on the original 3DS and XL would likely give a nice boost, the first price cut was 2.5 years ago and the XL released 1.5 years ago so a price cut seems like it should be right around the corner. In reality tho a price cut just simply isnt an option for Nintendo right now. Nintendo is expecting to post a loss this fiscal year and Wii U is still being sold at a loss, they need the 3DS/XL to remain at there current prices in order to help offset these losses. Thats why I believe they released the 2DS in the first place, a price cut on the other models isnt possible but they needed a lower entry point to prevent sales from stagnating too much so they released a bare bones entry level sku. At the very earliest I can see a price cut in late summer/early fall to something like 2DS $99, 3DS $129-139, XL $149-169. This will give sales nice bump initially but 3 years after the first price cut, 2 years after XL release and one year after 2DS release are people really holding off on purchasing these for a $30-50 price reduction when u coild easily find them at those prices over the holidays? |
Good point about Nintendo needing to keep the price up for their bottom line. I do think a lot of people do hold off on buying things until it's "worth it", there's a lot of people that see a price of an item and don't really think of picking one up on the cheap for just the holidays. Those low prices aren't the larger percentage of them being sold either, the stores usually have a limited amount to sell. Those are usually door busters, I tried to get one for my youngest daughter, got there early, and they were gone, store only had 20 at that price. There's a lot of cheapskates, like me, who will only get one when the price is right. Just like the ps3, the base model was $500, but sold like crap, because people just can't pull the trigger for that kind of money... If the ps4 was $500 it would sell like the x1, I think, and it's problem would be that $100.... You must take into consideration too, the price of entry isn't just the cost of the machine.... A game, sometimes a me memory card... The cheaper the machine, the cheaper the total package, and those who wait for price drops, also have the luxury of getting great games at a bargain too. So that $170 base 3ds+a $40 game for $210, could be $120+$20 for $140, that's a huge difference. Anyway, again, good conversation! I love this! I am sorry for my wall of text tho.... I'll try to be better with paragraphs, I'm on my phone, sometimes I get too into just typing away, you know? Have a good night.
