Over 80M for the 3DS? At less than 13M sold in it's 3rd year and down even further in 2014, I'd say that's doubtful.

I expect Sony to announce over 5 million sold by Jan 31st (I d really expect nearly 6 million, but that's being super optimistic)

The PS4 has really high demand, I wonder how it'll do in Japan. I hope the 3DS is undertracked in NA because I think 39k is relatively low.

How do we know it peaked? 2012>2013 yet 2013 had the biggest 3DS games and best library and 2012 didn't have as big nor as much (it did have the xl model however in 2012)

Also as much as i believe ps4 will sell more than 3ds in 2014 (and every year after that), its not 100% guaranteed. Anything can happen as time has proved many of us wrong in the past.

Ummm??? 3DS did not sell less than 13mil, nice try though. Also 2014 just started. It can be imo anywhere between 8mil (minimum) to 13mil (maximum). No need to cut something short ex: Pokemon

 You did happen to catch the fact that it sold better in the US, despite this being the Xbone's strongest region. The sales tip even more in PS4's favor in other countries where both platforms are available. Plus, there hasn't been any major releases as of late so that can't be the reason. More PS4's are being sold weekly as supply steadily becomes more available.

I had considered including that but I find that a dangerous strategy. There would be little point in stifling sales in order to sell more later. Momentum is more important going into the holidays IMO. Do you leave people 'wanting' now or later is the question. If they starve people for too long it could result in some people buying one of the other consoles. Hit them with a huge advertising campaign in the holidays and I think people will have more patience then, plus more friends and friends of friends will already have PS4s, making it more compelling to wait to join them.

Something isn't right here and I think it's a combination of VGC being slightly undertracked this month and Sony stockpiling for huge sales in Japan.

I agree with your second paragraph, but your first paragraph makes little sense.

You ask "How do we know it peaked?" and then basically explain how we know because 2013 had the biggest 3DS games and the best library plus another remodel and was down YoY.  Barring some unexpected Kinect-esque second wind, that's pretty indicative that the console has peaked.

3DS sold 12.89M in 2013, to be exact. Official numbers.
