If retail games are offered only digitaly in the future, this could turn the tide in favor of online portions in games.Bying a retail game will never get old for me too so I hope that's not how things end up.

It depends on the game. If it's an FPS, the online means more. If it's a game like tlou, infamous, platformers, etc. the single player matters. There's no right or wrong when it comes to this question. A multiplayer will occupy more time, but a good single player is a stronger lasting effect.
I like single player and enjoy CO-OP multiplayer, either online or off-line, but I don't play competitive MP at all.
It depends. Some games are best multiplayer-only, some games are best single-player-only. I bet most 7th gen games that had multiplayer would have been better off without multiplayer.
Anyway, nothing beats a good single-player experience. Multiplayer just isn't there quite yet. Player interaction is what's good about multiplayer games but ironically, it's also what's preventing them from becoming deep and memorable experiences.
I hate that the focus has been shifted more and more away from good single player, but that's how the market works and what it wants.

I go mostly for the SP experience. MP has it's place thou and I do enjoy it, you can put in more hours but somehow MP games are short lived experiences imo.
Online games definitely have their place and I won't begrudge those who like them but I will always be predominately a single-player gamer.

Single Player should always be the main focus with multiplayer being the long term value of the game... Not multiplayer being everything, in some special cases, multiplayer only is fine but in most cases, no thanks. If I am ever out and I want to play games on my laptop/3ds/phone with potentially no wifi around, I would want to play an awesome single player game |
THis, I still believe that a game should be able to live on its SP alone. Some will cite stuff like MMOs and what not but IMHO that whole genre kinda sucks. I guess its more of a case by case basis.
I'm completely ok with multiplayer. The problem starts when developers start to merge both single and multiplayer eliminating the choice for the player. That seems to be a trend that is still going. When I play singleplayer I want to be alone in this world and not some players invading my game, be it actively or just by messages.
Thy should both be strictly separated.
