Yeah I was thinking of this earlier today. If my favourite games really reflects what consoles I buy, and I do think so.
So I thought that you can think of your top 10 games of all time, and then see if they reflect on the consoles that you have bought through the last 3 generations and the current. And to make no confusion these are the generations I am speaking of.
- N64, PS1, Saturn (fifth generation)
- GC, PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox (sixth generation)
- Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 (seventh generation)
- Wii U, PS4, Xbox One (eight generation)
So now you can either think of your top games from each generation or just your top games from all generations listed above, and then see if if reflects what consoles you buy today and even boght earlier. You can either make a list or do whatever you like.
Here was what I came up with.
My top 10 games from each generations above would be:
5th generation
01. Zelda: Ocarina of time (N64)
02. Banjo Tooie (N64)
03. Banjo Kazooie (N64)
04. Zelda: Majoras Mask (N64)
05. Mario 64 (N64)
06. Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn)
07. GoldenEye 007 (N64)
08. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
09. Body Harvest (N64)
10. Shining Wisdom (Saturn)
6th generation
01. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
02. Zelda: Wind Waker (GC)
03. Resident Evil 4 (Multiplatform)
04. Zelda: Twilight Princess (GC)
05. ICO (PS2)
06. Okami (Multiplatform)
07. Eternal Darkness (GC)
08. Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer (PS2)
09. Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
10. Legend of Kay (PS2)
7th generation
01. Uncharted 2 (PS3)
02. Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
03. Uncharted 3 (PS3)
04. Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 (Wii)
05. Uncharted (PS3)
06. LittleBigPlanet 1&2 (PS3)
07. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure (Wii)
08. The Last of Us (PS3)
09. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)
10. Heavy Rain (PS3)
8th generation
Too early for me to list any top games yet, but Zelda will be a no brainer, and the next game from Team ICO.
So, does this reflect on the consoles that I buy today or have bought in the recent years? Let's see.
5th generation
N64, Saturn
6th generation
GC, PS2
7th generation
Wii, PS3
8th generation
Wii U, PS4
My conclusion: It seems like I have always played on Nintendo gaming systems, and made a good choice there. I dropped Sega quite early in favour for PS2, which turned out to be a good choice for me since I can't think of a single Saturn game that I would put on my top 5 list.
5th generation
With Saturn I was very dissapointed, a real waste of money even though I had some fun with it. I should probably have went with PS1. The N64 had so many games that I enjoyed, very good console.
6th generation
Here I made a good decision. Both the GC and PS2 had many games that I enjoyed, but I thought that GC compared to N64 was a bit of a dissapointment. I had hoped for more games like Banjo or Conker. Since I was dissapointed with the Saturn I didn't want to get the Dreamcast. And the new console Xbox felt a bit interesting, but the PS2 interested me more so I went with that one.
7th generation
This generation also felt really good, both systems gave me some really good games. But still I felt that the Wii mostly had crap games, but still those very good gems. The PS3 had some very good games and also some very good multiplatform games. I didn't buy the Xbox 360 because I didn't felt and still don't feel that there are enough games for me to make it worth it.
8th generation
This generation looks promising, even though it's very early to say exactly which games will come out. I have the Wii U and PS4, I think I bought them because I have played on their predecessors for so long now, and feel confident that I will see more good games. Xbox One I will probably not buy. I choosed PS2 over Xbox and more or less neglected the Xbox 360, so I see no reason why Xbox One will win me over? If they release their own Zelda-clone, make two really good Banjo games etc., then they might win me over.
