Forums - Gaming - If 4k can be streamed why do we even have consoles and pcs anymore?

I'm with you and will be first to do game streaming when it becomes a worthwhile experience. However 4K game streaing is far from being ready.

Here is local game streaming at test at 4K and while it works, its not ready for prime time. Skip to 7:50 mark...

For shits and giggles, here are some preictions.  4K game streaming will be possible in the following timeframe:

Local 4K streaming over wired connection - 2015

Local 4K streaming over Wifi - 2017

Internet based 4K game streaming through a service like Nvidia Grid - 2018

Data Caps == 3rd world problems I guess XD. All the internet here worth a damn is capped

Data caps isnt just a 3rd world problem. I've met quite a few guys online from Europe and the US who dont have the best internet in the world.

Guys who have similar internet speeds to myself (4mb, uncapped).

Streaming 4k video would require a MUCH better speed than that. And dont forget that most uncapped services are simply a marketing gimmick. People who are on uncapped plans do have some sort of "invisible" cap, whether they know about it or not its there.

I would also imagine that if everybody started streaming 4k video, existing networks will need to be scaled to cope.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

To put things in to perspective with data caps... You would need 15-20Mbps sustained throughput for 4K streaming. In 1 hour of viewing you would burn through almost 10 GB of data. If you have a cap of 50, 100, 200 GB per month, you'd be screwed.

In Canada a 50 Mbps connection with no caps can be had for ~$60 per month, so I don't see much issues with the connection. If you can afford a 4K TV, you should be able to afford this type of a connection.

With new Codec recently 4k streaming has become very feasable

Could this have any use for us gamers?

I'd gladly pay for a subscription for a part of server which lets me run all games in the highest quality there is available, without having any need to invest in anything else beside a good monitor or 2/3

Think about 500 million gamers using said 4k streams.  Do we have enough bandwidth for that?  Of lot of places on earth have stoneage copper cables.

Lag    Clap twice as fast as you can. The first clap was when you pressed a button  the second clap is when the game actually does what you wanted it to do.

You know sometimes you get a disconnect or cant connect to a server? Or a stupid video keeps buffering/stuttering or stops when you watch a stream? Think about how annoying all of this would be when you just want to play a game offline (via stream)

fact is there aint 500 million gamers

PC gamers traditionally hate long response times, so it'll be a long time before they jump on board.

Console gamers who are fine with the response times of streaming prefer to have physical ownership of games.

Most importantly, it's expensive! PlayStation Now is great for being consumer friendly and the like, but in the long run it's still a much more expensive option than buying a PS3 and games.

What kind of wifi is coming to sustain that?
NM found it, 802.11 ac, time to upgrade everything again...

I wonder if the often 2 bars I get in the living room will be enough for that :/

Data caps not really an issue where I come from.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Quality? Streaming music and video doesn't sound or look as good.

Data caps are such bullshit. The general public is too uneducated to realize that they're being forced to pay for something that costs nothing.
