It seems the highly anticipated next entry in the Kingdom Hearts series may be arriving much sooner than we expected. Receiving the latest European release schedule from Square Enix today reconfirmed a number of previously revealed release dates for a number of their titles including Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (14th February), Thief (28th February), Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (21st March) and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (14th April).
Interesting however is the inclusion of Kingdom Hearts 3 as a 2014 release, a game that Square Enix have had many believe is still far from completion
. Normally I wouldn’t think much of what could well be mistaken entry, but what has peaked my interest is the fact previous release schedules from the publisher have always sported a TBC for both the Xbox One and PS4 versions. Is development of the game moving along better than expected? It’s also worth noting that Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix has a 2014 date as well.
Being fairly new to the series myself (the excellent Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance being my starting point) I’m excited to try my first home console entry let alone a next generation one. Amazingly it’s been around eight years since the release of Kingdom Hearts II (of course there have been the handheld spin-offs as well) and Disney have since acquired Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Entertainment, and Lucasfilm – huge companies that have a number of potential IPs that could be used in the third and final instalment of the saga. The possibility of a Toy Story and Finding Nemo themed world are enough to have me sold. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Spiderman and just about any Marvel superhero series are also ripe for the picking.
Of course this isn’t 100% confirmation we’ll definitely see the game in 2014, but it’s certainly promising especially since this comes from the publisher themselves. We’ve reached out to Square for more information.
