Senior publishing source confirms new, cheaper Xbox One release for 2014

Friday, 31st January 2014 11:38 GMT 9 By Matt Martin

Microsoft will release a cheaper Xbox One this year, a well-respected source has told VG247, apparently confirming this week’s leaks out of Redmond.

Microsoft has told trusted publishing partners that it will release a new model Xbox One before the end of the year, a senior source has confirmed to VG247.

Although the source was unable to confirm that the system will be disc-less and feature a bluetooth adaptor, the new console will be priced cheaper than the current $499 model.

Upon release, Microsoft would likely drop the price of the current Xbox One model, placing it in the same price point as Sony’s PlayStation 4.

New hardware isn’t the only leak from Microsoft this week, with reports suggesting Halo 2 Anniversary Edition will be released on November 11, complete with a beta for Halo 5.

Although Microsoft isn’t commenting on the rumours, it isn’t taking these leaks lightly – the firm is reportedly looking to get legal on someone’s ass, adding fuel to the fire.

Question the guy within MS isn't also the one who leaked, RIGHT? RIGHT?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Wait, so the normal X1 for $400 and then an even cheaper SKU?

I kinda doubt that, but if true then MS can't be too happy with the current X1 performance.

Price cut in the first year? hmmm....

Good luck selling Xbox Ones over the next 9 months then Microsoft lol

I have a feeling they may need to cut at E3.

This always seemed a no brainer to me. I always expected 399 in late 2014.

In a way it's a pretty smart move, you soak the early adopters for the big bucks. They're willing to pay it. Otherwise those profits just go to ebayers (as Sony has probably lost a lot of money to ebayers!)

Also, Microsoft cant afford too fall too far behind PS4.

The Xbox One will be very cheap to make once Kinect falls in price. DDR3 is way cheaper than GDDR5. The only real surprise was that they didn't launch at 399.

Seems way to early for a price cut even if there competition is selling at a lower price. There sales numbers most be much lower then what they were projecting for them to take a price cut (A hefty price cut at that-$100) in less then a year of the one being in the market.

Ether this rumor is false or MS is really worried.

I will get mine next week in preparation for Titanfall beta.

I hope they give early adopters a free game or 12months Live Gold.... But considering how much the dolar has appreciated here in the last 6 months, I doubt there will be a price cut in Brazil or other in development countries.

if these rumors are false then MS need to stamp on them now!, if not, good luck selling the current Xbox One in the mean time.

Yeah if this gets out to mass media press, watch those sales die off fast.
