The message is simple enough:

- Less trolling and flaming
- More respect for one another, insightful posts, intelligence, analysis, reasoning and logic.

Absolutely, there are actually a lot of pretty insightful posts in here but they often get nonsensical or ridiculous answers. I also feel that most people are letting their preference and emotions steer their "analysis" and predictions, a lot of users are clearly bypassing reality in favor of some comforting construct.

Anyway, there are way too many threads whining about rules, banning and tracking in here lately, I think this is in part due to mods actually being a lot more patient in here than a lot of other sites so people actually feel they can start threads to whine on them, the tracking part is something unique to vgchartz though; surely a great challenge, probably the biggest one in here as far as discussions go, especially for new members who don't have any insight into how it all works.

I don't think Brett is being unreasonable or going overboard here at all, if I had a large website with a forum and people started acting like bitches and basically used the free forums as an arena to constantly whine about what the site is actually doing, I'd be pretty goddamn pissed. And then they also whine about being moderated for their initial whining. Sometimes when I read a post, I think to myself; why on earth is this person even in here?

This right here is why i always give you 5p in the greatest user tournament rounds :D

Bring us back to the point the sales discussions where actually about the numbers and not trying to spin it in your "sides" favor.

People are not using logic anymore when discussing sales.

anyone remember this

Stop allowing anything not connected with the original topic of a thread and anything that even remotely tries bashing or taking a jab at someone.

75% of this place would be banned.

I was told by kantor that i can call a posters post stupid. that is hardly respectful. on top of that the mod team is so inconsistant its mind boggling. I got banned for saying someones denial was pathetic (same concept as above) and another user in the same thread said the exact same thing (no moderation) and another user called the guy a clown (no moderation)

Nail on head this is the biggest issue here. Some users get away with impunity derailing, trolling, taking little digs at people, others gen banned for saying boo, this creates a false sense of whats ok and what isn't.

I have to say that it doesn't really encourage respect to call someone's point stupid in general, even if it's not an insult it isn't compatible with the theme of respect. At least when curbing respect, that should be discouraged until respect and intelligence is restored, then it might be interesting to leave some room for poking fun at each other that way. But it would be a priviledge earned by the community building respect.

It's like you can't make fun of your friend until you've built enough credit with him to feel free to pull his/her leg a little.

No, I agree - I'm certainly not encouraging it.

As I've already said I'd like people to engage in discussions in a respectful and open-minded way - take on board different points of views and express your own with some form of evidence / backup.

At the same time, I understand that most people can get heated at times (I'm as guilty as anyone) and it can be frustrating when you make a point and people still don't understand or accept it. I can understand situations where someone feels that someone else's behaviour is "stupid" or "idiotic" and I understand if people feel the need to point that out. It isn't ideal by any means and straddles the line of becoming disrespectful but I think it is different to say that what someone is saying is stupid compared to calling someone stupid which is far more personal and a direct insult.

The real world isn't black and white unfortunately and with grey areas like this I trust moderators to make a decision based on the context.

Couldn't you try and recruit some more moderators, that way instead of only reactive moderating they can proactive mod and actually engage in the discussions.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Thanks! Yeah, I did miss it...derp...

One of the biggest pitfalls I've noticed that people are falling into is where they think another user is trolling/flamebaiting but rather than clicking the report button and allowing the moderation team take care of it they try to beat the trolls at trolling. Don't claim that certain members or usergroups are immune to moderation, if you see someone breaking the rules, click report, report them, leave it alone.

It might take a few hours but the mods here will get around to what your report was, if it was something which was a open and closed case like sig gifs of 20mb then a mod will just instantly sort the issue or if it's a big flame war back and forth there might be some behind the scenes discussion as to how to deal with it. But all the reports are dealt with in a fairly timely manner especially when as ioi pointed out, the moderators on here are all just users who volunteered for the jobs of making these forums a better/civil place.

I don't know how else to put this really... if you see someone pouring petrol around the place, get someone to come and clean it away... don't start flicking matches at it to see if you can cause an inferno. Remember that if you try and out-troll a troll and they decide to report you for it, you're the one who is getting a few days off the forums. Remember the moderators on here don't get to read every single post in every single thread, if it's a thread they've been asked to look at based on a report of a certain post they'll come in and deal with that post, they could go on to lock the whole thread because it's just a massive back and forth of hate.

All I will say is what I witnessed the other night with those users against IOI has never happened on VGC in the 7 years Ive been here. It is WAY worse than VGC ever was. Even in the dodgy mods days.

What did I miss? I've been working so much lately I've barely had time to post in here!

This thread. Read from the start.

Now there's a lovely group of people that this forum would be pretty much fine without.

So youre saying it is okay to mod out of ignorance? Because it aint. If I say someone is being ignorant and that person is by definition being ignorant then it isnt an insult. so why should i be moderated because the mod didnt read the thread to see the sheer ignorance? Example you ask? Dark Feanor was demanding to see proof and pictures of the so called lines for ps4s at best buy. when someone provided him with what he asked for he changed his tune to "well that doesnt prove anything." That is by definition ignorant. So if i point that out why should i be banned?
