Well, people lead us to believe here that Xbox makes no money and Windows 8 is failing. Yet last quarter Microsoft posted the largest profit in the history of Microsoft ever. So where is this money coming from if Windows is no Cash cow and Xbox is failing?

Yeah, it's really amazing the disconnect between the internet and the corporate reality sometimes.
Internet: Sony is amazing, always winning, incredibly popular, beloved by all!
Reality: Sony is a company in bad to desperate straights that loses money nearly constantly, while Microsoft is ridiculously profitable.
To read the internet you would think Sony should be making 500 times more profit than Microsoft, while the reality is the exact reverse.

Heh, amusing how when anybody tries to do the same to MS, it whines against bad, dirty, ugly and stinky patent trolls. 
Anyhow, MS is doing its own interest as any other company, shame on USA for their one-sided (not particularly in MS favour, but in favour of patent holders in general, even on the most trivial, vague, obvious and arguable ones) and sloppily applied (USPTO often doesn't even bother to thoroughly check those already lax conditions to grant patents, leaving to tribunals the chore of cleaning the mess it causes) patent law and on Google for not building adequate patent protection for Android users.
Not as much. If Windows 9 fails to recapture those that didn't buy Winsows 8, i see Microsoft making a couple less billions in profits come 2015. Altough it would have to decline for another 10 years before Microsoft can even begin to hurt, as it's still a very profitable product.

Xbox has never made a profit in the history of Xbox but Windows is doing fine
(Even though Windows 8 is a downgrade to Windows 7)

In just 2011, Xbox made 1/19th in profit of the total worth of Sony.
