It made Microsoft insane amounts of money when it practically came with every pc.
But now that pc's are getting replaced with smart phones and tablets and microsoft can't seem to compete on this market against ios and android.
Is it time to look for a new cashcow?

PC will always be the preferred fapping machine. As long as men fap, PCs will sell. I'd rather fap without having to hold my phone or a tablet.

Well tablets or mobiles aside, businesses still need desktops and laptops for their employees, imo tablets are not in position yet to rival business laptops and alot of industries still need better hardware to run the software they require. I think its still a significant part, the main difference is less consumers upgrade their laptops as often anymore due to the tablets, but that's the only sales ms looses.

I guess that's the whole purpose of window phones and tablets, in an attempt to rival the current hype of tablets, admittedly not very succesful at the moment, but better than nothing.

I've been seeing a fair share of factories in the past few months...I have seen ZERO tablets on use for anything. Laptops and PCs...aplenty.

Yeah, I don't think that in the serious business world we're gonna be seeing a move to tablets anytime soon.

I'll surely keep on using Windows for PC games for many years, but MS did everything it could to ensure Win 7 will be my last Windows (I could have been forced to choose Win 8 for my next notebook, but HP just solved this problem) and I'll surely won't choose its closed platform for devices in which I haven't any legacy Windows app to run. BTW, even for HW support, while Windows still gets the top performing graphics drivers, due to its domination of PC gaming, for other devices like printers and scanners I already am finer with using them under Linux. Through the years I've come to be able to stop using Partition Magic to make or modify partitions and now I almost always use Linux tools for the job, except any formatting required during Windows installation (but except them, other NTFS partitions created and formatted under Linux just work fine, I use them for every data I need to access from both OS').
I'd say Office too is at risk, as it doesn't offer sufficient platform and app neutrality for document files, and this is a feature any serious user can't do without: having your own data hostage of a single SW producer is actually not much different from ramsomware.
