Forums - Sony - PS4 Camera actually selling quite well

I don't think anyone would have thought streaming from consoles would have been so popular. It's driving the sales, imo.

It's funny, since Sony both:

1) Did, hence streaming abilities out of box

2) Didn't, hence lack of cameras

I don't think that really means a whole lot. Sony has pumped a lot of money and effort into things that no one cared about and kinda dropped it. Home, PSP Go, etc. come to mind. Point, I'm not sure the inclusion of the feature means they had a lot of faith in it.

We can be sure that they care now, though

I don't think it's because of the Playroom. Obviously demand currently outstrips supply, which indicates SCE may have been caught off guard by demand.

I'm picking one up eventually, either as a part of a game bundle, or when they become significantly discounted; I just don't have any immediate need for a PS4 camera.

Supposedly, SCE opted to add 4GB of GDDR5 RAM to the PS4 in lieu of bundling the camera. I'm glad they did. Camera can always be bought later. RAM specifications are set in stone for the life cycle of the console.

For sure. I'm excited to see how the service will evolve and greater interaction to be had between PS4 streamers and their audiences.

Wouldnt that apply to every new thing they try though?

In any case with regards to streaming i think they would have had faith given the success of Twitch on PC's.

There was also a massive uproar when SE decided that streaming wasnt allowed for FF14...which obviously effected the game. SE changed their stance pretty quickly.

If theres one thing we know about these big companies is that once they find out that something has a direct impact on sales and popularity they will react.

I picked up one in the UK during the boxing day sales for 20 quid (about $32) Works quite well though I only messed with playroom for a bit, the rest of the time just using for voice chat in games.

What you mean for voice-chat in games? Don't you just use the included headset/mic thing (that connects to controller) for that?

Damn, they're gonna have to start making games for it if true.

I think somehow the meme that a VIDEO camera is required for MICROPHONE functionality has just somehow taken over.

Possibly due to XBone's Kinect being "associated" with voice control and that carrying over to general console gamer perceptions, even though such an association with a VIDEO camera makes zero technical sense, and said voice control functions should work with ANY microphone. I believe since MS removed the requirement to have Kinect plugged in, that you actually can still use voice control if you have a microphone plugged in.

Apparently both Sony and MS are happy for people to have this misunderstanding if it leads to them selling a more expensive product.

As to the idea of there being a 'scarcity' of the PS4 Camera, the context here kind of matters:

there is a scarcity of the PS4 console PERIOD. More console sales will mean more camera sales.

Nobody should be talking of Sony under forecasting camera sales unless there is a demonstrable increased demand/scarcity RELATIVE to console sales.

As the above poster in the UK seemed to fine a camera ON SALE just fine, I don't think there's much evidence for such a scarcity. You can also find inflated above MSRP prices for the console on EBAY, etc, so the cameras also being in that position isn't a RELATIVE difference to the console. If there is increased demand/scarcity relative to the console, I wouldn't expect cameras to ever be put on sale, rather, retailers would milk them for profits, and the cameras should ROUTINELY be being sold for much more on EBAY, etc. I don't think that's clear cut the situations, thus, I don't see any issue of Sony underforecasting demand relative to console sales. PS4 as a whole just has a lot of demand, and that's carrying over to the camera, which seems to be NOT A FLOP, to put it lightly.

The Twitch statistics are interesting because it shows how PS4/camera is ACTUALLY BEING USED by gamers, in a way that further promotes the platform and indicates that users are finding actual utility/value out of the camera and functionality provided. As contrasted to XBone's Kinect, which was hyped much more by MS, yet is not achieving and demonstrating those things to the same degree. Although to be fair, it was not necessarily MS hyping Kinect into the stratosphere, as fanboys doing so as a way to justify/defend the platform.

HELP: Does anybody know how to compose messages in Edit mode (such as when quoting somebody) WITHOUT forcing every line break into "hard line break" mode, i.e. those that put extra space between each line? I like to write messages breaking up sentences into distinct lines for readability, but don't like the double-space line breaks. You can hand-edit the HTML code to achieve that, but that is a ridiculous pain in the ass.  How do you make a line break without making it double-spaced in the first place? (this isn't a problem in non-quoted posts using Quick Reply, like this one)

Personally I don't really see the value or personally like "Move controls" via camera as auxilliary to most games, other the "fun party games" and the like (not core gaming experiences). PS4 now has the touchpad, but 6 Axis really seems the best "auxiliary control", that can do similar things to anything "Move controls" could do, but doesn't require you to alter your gross body physics very much, and doesn't require moving fingers off of pads/thumbsticks like the touchpad.

I'm less interested in the touchpad as auxiliary control in 'normal games', as much as the fact that it enables new types of games. Sony has been mouse/keyboard compatable for a while now, but realistically any game released for it will need to support non-mouse/keyboard setups, just because those aren't standard. With a touchpad, games can be designed around a mouse/touchpad control scheme. Especially for certain genres coming from PC, that is great, and could see more such genre games coming to PS4 console since the same control scheme is compatable. (people might still think actual mice are superior, but the experience is at least 'compatable', likewise on PC laptops... if people want the optimal competitive option, they can plug in a mouse (which are very cheap for the low end ones anyways)
