For most influential games of the generation, I would say Wii Sports and CoD: Modern Warfare. Wii Sports spawned the motion gaming craze, and forced Sony and Microsoft into creating their own motion gaming controllers. Modern Warfare spawned a bunch of copycat FPS.

I don't think either are the best games of the generation, but that is a different discussion.

Agree 100%

I say Assassin's Creed. It brought the open world craze upon us by showing us what was possible in a truly open world.

I'm pretty sure San Andreas did that :D

I have yet to find a GTA game where I can climb buildings ;)

You may not be able to climb buildings but you can do pretty much everything else :D

Kinda feel like TLOU should be on here over GTAV.

Most influential? Wii Sports

while, TLOU was really good, i think GTA might have more influence. its probably going to convince other publishers that they can make a game as big as GTA, and it already caused dUbisoft to delay Watch dogs.

It's a bit early to see what kind of influence GTAV will have.

Tough to argue with the OP - CoD4, for better or for worse, was an insurmountable presence this gen, it really shaped the landscape.

Uncharted 2 would probably be next up, though a fair distance behind. The game's outstanding cinematography, set pieces, story-gameplay balance etc have definitely shown their influence.

Don't really see Xenoblade or Mario Galaxy as having demonstrated major influence. Not sure about RDR as I don't play many sand box games, but in other genres I haven't noticed RDR casting many shadows.

Of those games excluded from the poll, most influential would have to be Wii Sports and Wii Fitness..

Cod 4 influenced me to by all call of duty titles after it and it's probably the reason I'm excited about titan fall and one of my deciding factors on xbox 1 over ps4..........need I say more? nothing else in gaming history comes close to that for me. I wasn't even that much into games at the time. I just happened to have a 360 and a buddy of mine loan his to me by chance for a crappy NARUTO game. I've never been so glued to a screen before then.

TLOU is my game of the gen, and GTA V really didn't do that much new. I also feel like the AC series was more influential, not my favorite, but more influential.

I think that TLOU will be influential in the way story telling will be presented, but not much else.

That's a significant change lol. It's also shows the maturation in games because women finally aren't sexualized in a game. I'm not saying there aren't good female characters in games, but they still are sexualized in general. Take Miranda in mass effect 2. She's a good character, but they still sexualize her A LOT. Why does she have to wear an outfit that contours to her body exactly. The gameplay was also very original. I've never really played a game where each bullet I fired felt so heavy. Even games that have you conserve ammo haven't done it like they did. I rarely had more than 12 bullets, and getting shot was really bad. I don't think it's going to be a style every game adopts, and I would hate it if it was. But I wouldn't mind some games that do that.
