Forums - Gaming - 3DS vs Vita 3rd Party Sales and Support

While I think the comparison and assertion made in the other thread was unfounded, especially since the OP didn't even try, I also feel that this thread is on the meaningless side, though obviously better researched.

What are we really comparing here? Simple "third party vs. third party" is not going to line up. What does the Vita have that we can compare against Monster Hunter? Or Dragon Quest? Or Kingdom Hearts? Or Puzzles and Dragons, for that matter? The point with the Vita all along has been that it lacks these massive franchises and titles. You can't say "this proves that they sell better on the 3DS", as those would also be the best-selling Vita titles if they had come to the Vita. It's comparing apples to chocolate cakes.

As for the second list, I see at least one game, Street Fighter, that released on the 3DS before the Vita was even launched. That kind of comparison has little value going forward.

Excepting those games for which there is no real comparison, it looks to me that both platforms have areas where they hold an advantage. For example, western games targeted at kids will obviously perform better on the 3DS. Just look at the LEGO titles. On the other hand, it looks like some of the mid-range Japanese games aimed at the anime crowd have found a home on the Vita. Both platforms look to be getting solid support (from Japan) going forward, which is all that really matters.

The point of the thread is to bust the myth that 3rd parties performs better on Vita than on 3DS, since that isn't true.

What is this second list you're talking about? Street Fighter is only on ONE list, and that's the one with 3DS games... And while it might be true that it was released before the Vita was even released, that should also nullify Rayman Origins on the Vita since it was out a whole 3 months before it gor released on the 3DS. And that would mean that the Vita only has 3 multiplat games that did better than on 3DS, which would only support my OP that the 3DS is a better place of 3rd parties.

But I do find your last paragraph to be quite interesting. I wonder if that's due to the audience on each platform, or if it's the publishers that releases certain games on a certain console.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Which portable console would I develop for?

Simple:
Which best supports my game design ideas?
Which has the largest pre-existing user base for my particular genre of game?
Which has the most positive market trend in terms of continued user adoption while my game goes through 1-2 years of development?

How much more would it cost to port from 1 to the other if I wanted to get the game on both consoles? I mean is it cheaper to go from Vita to 3DS or 3DS to Vita?

It seems 3rd party games have better attach rate on Vita, but what he said about 3rd party support was true , Vita has more 3rd party games coming in 2014.

You debunked the myth about games selling better on 3DS.

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

Who cares about attach rate? Its quite obvious that the 3DS is a better console for (most) 3rd party games. The 3DS has 47 3rd party games that has sold 0.3m units, so that's 47 games that sold just as well or better than the Vitas whole top 10 best selling 3rd party games. And of course the Vita will have better attach rate, and thats because of the bigger user base on 3DS; as a console gains traction, it also gets a more diverse audience, and that means a more diverse taste in games. Just take a look at the original xbox and gamecube; they had way higher attach rates than the ps2, but which console sold more games? Which console were the better option for 3rd parties?

Well it''s certainly impossible to spin this. Not only the 3DS gets the bigger third prty franchises, they also do pretty good.

Awesome job DanneSandin!

Well, thank you! Even if we disregard the bigger franchises on the 3DS, it's still a more viable option for 3rd parties.

Woops that's also true it seems. I think as of now the Vita as no chance against the 3DS... It can carve a niche in Japan of course but I don't expect another Sony handheld after the Vita... Kinda ironic considering what Vita means...

Please bust this for me. Please provide accurate sales data for games available on both systems. As exclusives isnt a fair comparison due to variables,

In the second post of this thread, I compare games that's out on both the 3DS and the Vita. Two things should be noted: Rayman Origins was released on the Vita 3 months before the 3DS version, and those games are the 10 best selling multiplat games for the VITA, NOT the 3DS. If the systems shares any more games together, most likely they sold better on the 3DS than on Vita. The 3DS has a lot more 3rd party games it seems, so it was a lot harder to extract sales data from multiplat games on that platform, since I had to look through a hell of a lot more games than I had to go through on the Vita.

And further more, the 3DS has 47 3rd party games that sold 0.3m or more, while the Vita has... well... 10 games that did 0.3m or more.

I honestly don't know what else you want. The 3DS has the best top 10 selling 3rd party titles, the 3DS has a lot more games that did just as good, or better than the 10th best selling games on PSV, and most multiplat games sold better on 3DS.
