I cant wait for Iwata to step down. I really really want to see someone in there with some vision, hopefully.

Nintendo needs a good install base to sell their games, and Wii-U is not going to suffice. They are missing out millions of software sales right now because the install base is to small. |
That would undermine Wii U, which I don't want either. I don't want to have to shell out hundreds for an Xbone or PS4.

463,187,000,000 Yen, or ~$4.5 billion.

Only other option i see is for Nintendo to re-release the Wii-U as a true tablet(with the option to connect to a tv offcourse). There is definitely a market for a really good gaming tablet, and they would be able to keep supporting the current Wii-U and there would be massive amounts of games launched that actually use the tablet controller and touch screen.
Only problem is the hardware they chose(PowerPC) is not really suited for mobile devices. I don't now if they could get the power draw to acceptable levels for a tablet.

in the business world is that a lot?

I agree, especially with the Smash part. There just isn't much insentive to buy a Wii-U for these games, they are not story driven games and you might aswell play these games on the Wii. I know several people who like to play ''Mario Kart'', but they really don't care that it's on the Wii or Wii-U. In fact, you could even play the Wii versions of these games on a Wii-U. And Gamecube sales levels of Mario Kart will be a massive dissapointment to many people here. |
One thing I think that could be hurting Wii U sales is that its too similar to 3DS.
Nintendo 64 vs Gameboy Color-huge graphical and gameplay differences
Gamecube vs Gameboy Advance-huge graphical and gameplay differences
Wii vs DS-huge graphical and gameplay differences
Wii U vs 3DS-graphics gap has closed drastically and now both have motion/touch controls and the games are very similar
NSMB2 vs NSMBU, DKC Returns 3D vs Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 7 vs Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros U vs Smash Bros 3D, Ocarina of Time 3D vs Wind Waker HD

It's pretty substantial.
To put it in context, though, it's about half of what they had before the 3DS launched.

LOL at peole overreacting sooo much. im looking at you Soundwave lol
is not that bad. its not close to be that bad. the losses theyre posted to years in a row are the expeceted as power requirements for next gen consoles increase at a greater rate than manufacturing processes.
an powerful HD console is not like making a damm cheap ass N64 guys...
and 3DS is pretty much the same. its like a miniature GC with 3D for the love or god...
we really dont know which is the reason of the loss...could easily be R&D for their new HW pieces...could be the greenlight of many expensive 3DS and WiiU projects....im looking at you Zelda U, Metroid prime 4....
my point is....STOP OVERREACTING people!

Its pretty bad, they adjusted Wii U+3DS hardware down by over 10m.
And we do know what the loss is from, about 1/3 from increased marketing plus R&D, the rest from underperforming hardware ans software sales.
