Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One vs. PS4 spec difference is "fairly marginal" Microsoft says

The PS4 performance will pull away from Xbox One in future. Getting on 50% more gpu power, 2x rendering pipelines performance, turbo mode implemented on cpu, huge memory bandwidth increase, more cpu and gpu resources consumed on xbox one due to kinect and additional operating systems.

Early games aren't ideal for either console but the difficulty of developing for xbox one has consumed more resources. It's the reverse situation from last gen where ps3 development took a lot more resources. As it becomes clear the ps4 is outselling xbox one developers will realise the ps4 is the major format and it will be more critical to get the ps4 version working at its best as it will have the potential to sell more copies.

The ps4 will get technically stronger titles not just because its technically superior but also because its commercially more important to do so.

The Xbox One needed a lead position to stay competitive but thanks to its ridiculous pricing the ps4 will also get greater commercial importance which could have worked to assist the xbox one. I.e. if the xbox one had been the no.1 format in the USA that would have benefitted the xbox one performance level.

Lets not forget the embedded 32MB high speed memory of Xbox One is going to do it no favours in the future supporting 3D games, 4k res and virtual reality headsets. Here the ps4 design offers huge advantages in frame buffer size. Like the Xbox 360 once its frame buffer is not a comfortable fit for the embedded memory its performance takes a massive hit. Both wii u and xbox one share the same amount of embedded memory. Seems generous for wii u but very limiting for the much more powerful xbox one.

Don't get me wrong though 2 great consoles and I intend to buy both but the ps4 just seems the far more important this generation. After getting a demonstration of the oculus rift I can see that is the future. Despite the low res graphics the effect was truly amazing. This is the future of gaming with the higher res rift that is to follow.

We all know Sony is bringing such a device to ps4, not confirmed but its their big project. Where Oculus Rift is a slightly awkward pc device the Sony headset will be plug and play but with the same amazing effect. It will utterly transform gaming in home and be a massive commercial advantage to ps4 over xbox one.

Microsoft have been wrong footed this generation. Not to the same level as Nintendo but still some big mistakes.

I just feel this generation is already Sony's.

I am a Sony fan and agree with u 100 %,but I remember PS3's 2007-08. This is not over yet. Price drop + Kinectless bundle, great exclusives , enhance Games with Gold, etc. MS can still do things right, just like 180 was.

PS4 has more grunt, end of. Imo trying to PR their way around it, MS is just sounding frustrated and defensive to the point that it is yawn inducing.

The result of doing so only serves as a means of transport for those that would otherwise have had no freaking clue the ps4 was more powerful, to learn that it is as a result.

it's like nissan and toyota releasing cars that look almost identical, and putting them on sale, then having nissan make big banners in their showrooms saying "the toyota may have a more powerful, efficient engine, but our car comes with a tv you can only watch when the hand break is on.

All it does is give free advertising to the competition on areas that would otherwise have been overlooked.

Very good point.  I agree, down playing the competitions obvious advantage it just highlighting your own weakness at the end of the day. However I think that MS will continue to give free advertising and make the uninitiated curious about just how 'marginal' the difference is because the MS PR machine just can't seem to let this one go.

If it's all about the games, then let the games do the talking. Last Generation Sony showed they had a broader range of AAA titles from 1st party devs; Sony knows it's all about the games too.

It's microsoft of course they will say this....It's the biggest gap we have seen since the xbox ps2, but the original xbox came out 2 years after. Ms can downplay all they want.

The PS2 launched in 2000 and the Xbox, 2001. Though, that one year isn't the reason why the Xbox was more powerful. It was more powerful because MS took a BATH as farS profit goes in order to gain marketshare.

As far as the graphics wars go, it won't matter.

It really is that simply, but it is funny to see people spin like crazy lol.

no but really if you look at it from the right angle on the third wednesday of november on a leap year, wearing a robe standing in a circle with three naked virgins chanting 7:18 from the new testiment while impaling their hearts with frozen gamecube controller cords, for a brief moment the xbox one has more power.

People get so defensive over stuff like this, it's actually pretty humorous to read.

I swear MS would argue that silver is worth more than gold...

no, just that gold is worth marginally  more.

LOL thank you.  I say that gold vs silver comment because we ALL know that gold is worth much more than silver.  However not everyone understands the difference in the GPU, but the people that can know how big it really is (And MS is one of those people even if they pretend not to).

it comes down to the games. You're gonna see great exclusive games on Xbox One, and when you look at the cross-platform games, and there's gonna be exclusive content on Xbox One."

I can't believe there is 9 pages of replies on here and no one see's or complains about this from the OP... You know that basically means the next gen port of GTA5 again is going to see its first DLC drop on the X1 to give people a really good reason to pick it up on the Next Gen systems and to sway them to microsoft if there was still doubt on which system to get, Microsoft and Rockstar already have good communications open and they did it for "The lost and the damned" and "the ballet of gay tony" for GTA4.

I would so much rather they would spend their money for making games on adding stuff to their own titles or creating new games rather than paying devs to cut things out of the same game for another platform, it's awful for the consumer, we get less no matter what way you look at this practice. Even if you happen to have the console which buys the exclusive/early dlc you know that you will be paying for that perk in some other way, they gotta get the money they spend back.
