Forums - Sony - Tales of Xillia's combat is hard to navigate..

Yeah, I agree. Vesperia felt much smoother.

Me and my mate are finding it hard to get a grasp on, too. I keep jumping instead of running in the direction I intend to.

Definitely not as good as Graces in terms of battle system; but leagues better in story. And graphics.

Strange, I am the opposite. I find this to have more depth to the fighting and I grasped it quicker than I did Graces. Which character did you use?

I've grasped it a bit better now but it's still harder than Graces for me.  I used Graces on 2D planes though, and I do have Xillia on that as well but it never seems to work.

Alvin at the moment & my mate is using Millia.

Ahh, I think you guys should have started with Jude. He really is the best for learning.

If you're jumping, you're pressing up on the stick. Try not to do that lol. I was actually having trouble getting the jump to work at the beginning, though that stopped being an issue after a while.

Also play Jude.

Anyway bugrimmar if you haven't played a fast-paced RPG like Tales before, you just have to get used to it. You'll get the hang of it eventually, including the subsystems and such. I mean I've played lots of Tales but I still needed time to adjust.

As for switching links, I don't know what the issue is for you as it actually is really responsive and quick. Just get used to it I guess. With switching characters I thought it was a bit awkward due to the button combination needed to switch. I'd try not switching characters too often if you're not getting the hang of everything else. Switching characters means you should also know how to use them, but if you're just trying to move them, it might be a bit much if things are going too fast for you. So I'd leave that for later. The game isn't that hard so you won't be needing to switch characters mid-battle much. If you just want to control another character for a while, put them at the top in the menu outside of battle.

I don't know what to click. Like when it says combo chance, I spam whatever I can click but nothing happens... I don't understand the instructions.

It's just... movement is relative to where you start on the battlefield and you have to move the stick in the direction of the enemies to move towards them.  A lot of the time, that involes pressing up left or up right, and then the character will just jump.  It's frustrating, but happening less frequently now.

And possibly I'll give Jude a try, but Alvin is the man.  And I like having Jude as a link partner to pick me up when I get hit, which happens a lot.

got the hang of it from the get-go

wasn't all that complicated

I'm talking about the "combo chance" during the overlimit phase. What are you supposed to click to make a combo?

Sounds like my kind of RPG. Gonna get it from the PSN this week when it hits $10.
