Forums - Gaming - Sony still in discussions with Microsoft over Windows Phone

Sony needs marketshare on smartphone devices and microsoft needs marketshare on smartphone os market.
Both really need to engage aggressive and innovative, and the last year has shown that both companies succeed in at least increasing their market shares.
A sony phone with Windows is just another option. They could make an aggressive product because sony patents plus ms patents, and if they sign a good contract costs would be low.

Would be a wise move imho.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

It's too difficult for Sony to compete in the Android market right now. Expanding might be a good idea especially since there isn't as much competition on Windows.

I don't but considering that Htc Windows Phone 8X and 8S retailed higher or at the same price than other flagship smartphones at the time, which had better specification like Galaxy S3 or even Htc One X, and both launched earlier, I don't see a scenario where a Sony WP costs less or packssimilar specs than a Xperia "Z2" and costs the same. (couldn't find a retail price of Samsung ACIV S Neo to compare Samsung's pricing of similar phones).

As for the 3rd player, I don't see a neccessity of another OS. You have 2 to keep themselves in check, plus in house competition of Android devices to keep consumer wallets happy. And please tell what innovation did WP bring, maybe I'm missing something here.

So basically, you're just pulling ideas out of thin air?
There are multiple reasons why a flagship phone running Windows Phone could be more expensive than one that is running Android, be it concessions from the sale, telecommunication company not subsidising it as much, sale/special or the phone manufacturer willing to simply push more Android sales.
It's not necessarily one of cost of the Operating System.

In regards to the two main current OS players, I completely utterly disagree.
Apple is completely content living it's life out in it's own ecosystem, Android controls the rest of the market with a heap of device manufacturers pushing it.
We need a 3rd player to give some competition to Google, otherwise things stagnate and end up as a "Me to" copy approach.

As for innovation... Just buy a Windows phone and give it a whirl you might be surprised, you're not exactly going to take someone's opinion over the internet at face value anyway, so I would be wasting my time.

My brother and father are really happy with their Lumias and the Windows 8.1 (which I don't like in PC... but for phones seem fit).

And if it is implemented right and with goood agreement for both it can help Sony attract a new market and MS push a little further.

Yeah they are my ideas and speculation, so I'm pulling them out of my head obviously. Phones on WP are more expensive then comparable phones on Android, and I talk about retail prices so no contract "bias" is present, why would I care what is the reason for it as a consumer?

And no thank you, getting a Xperia Z in a few hours by coincidence.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

As far as I see they are a lot cheaper them iPhones and Androids (even Xperias, Galaxies are close to iPhone price here... other brands, like motorola, LG, etc is more for the people that don't know what they are buying)... when you junction a fantastic mobile maker (nokia is well regarded in brazil for durability) with a pratical OS on a cheaper package it can get big... probably its something like iPhone>Galaxy>Xperia=WPNokia

Reviving Sony phones from the depth might be a tough one considering the amount of competition out there these days. However, I have a feeling that it might be a winning move if it is made with thoughts and care. It would be great if images of prototypes emerge soon!

This is true and don't doubt we will see Windows OS on many playforms.
