3D gaming is back to being a niche, if it ever really got out of it in the first place.

I enjoyed it most with Descent 2 on a 72" screen, yet nothing has changed since then! Apart from a few 3ds titles, games are not made with stereoscopic 3D in mind, It's an after thought with many 2D effects not really working in 3D, or worse faked 3D to limit the performance hit. The drop in resolution and/or frame rate isn't worth it as many games already struggle with 2D.
The PC can combat the performance hit ofcourse, but stereoscopic 3D on a pc monitor isn't all that impressive. The amount of people who have a powerful PC hooked up to a large screen TV or projector is too small to justify rewriting the graphics engine to implement proper stereoscopic 3D.

I also fear for the Occulus rift. Games need much bigger adjustments to work properly in VR. The initial wow factor is there, but many people will soon find out that playing most current games with a VR headset isn't very enjoyable for longer periods of time. Proper games, made specifically to work on a HMD will determine the success of VR. Even then it will still be a smaller group of gamers that will put up with wearing a headset and be completely shut off from their surroundings.

Around the Network

I was thinking about that myself a while ago; it sucks 3D gaming has slowed down a lot since I really enjoyed that feature. Though the Samsung glasses could be a little more comfortable.

3D is probably not dead yet but more niche. Some of the 3DS games actually add to the game via the 3D feature however as you can see Pokemon is mostly 2D if not all. Reason behind it is simple 2DS.

I love to play games in stereoscopic mode now and then.

The problem of many AAA-titles is: they are using special effects which enhance the overall grphics immensely, but conflict with the stereoscopic view if not proper used. Shadow textures, post processing filters, water reflections, fog, smoke, god rays and other light sources often have wrong depth informations.

Some of these problems can be easily avoided (if the developers care and plan properly) or fixed (by community-patches): http://helixmod.blogspot.de/

Other effects can't be fixed for stereoscopic view and have to be turned off. Older games (HD Remastered games from the previous generation), indie titles (Trine 2, all Telltale Games), which aren't so post-processing-heavy, are much better suited for stereoscopic modes... they also don't run at the hardware limit, so the compromises to free enough resources for the second perspective (lowering resolution or effects) are fewer.
