Sony President and CEO Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai owned the stage yesterday at CES 2014 with a definitely interesting keynote, and today he explained why the Ps4 (and the Xbox One) is selling well as part of an interview on the Japanese tech website AV Watch.

As for games, as you can see the PlayStation 4 is an interesting platform, with interesting content, so if we can provide the new social aspect perfectly, there will be customers out there for it. I’ve seen this at launch. It’s not just for PS4, it’s the same for Xbox One.

There’s also the opinion that “it’s selling well because it’s a new platform,” but Grand Theft Auto V sold eight million copies on existing platforms. It’s the same for consoles.

I think, again, that the point is that customers evaluate on the “ability to move emotionally” of the content.

The “ability to move emotionally,” or “Kando” in Japanese, is a concept Hirai-san stressed a lot on in yesterday’s keynote. It’s actually nothing new, as it’s at the base of many marketing theories, even if other definitions with similar meanings are normally used.

It’s doubtless that the concept of “Kando” applies perfectly to both the PS4 and the Xbox One. We see it every day here and on basically every gaming website. There’s no better evidence of emotional involvement than seeing fans of both camps tearing at each other’s eyes day in and day out.
